Wrestled at EOU for 4 years, winning the160 pound national title in 1967 at the NAIA National tournament. He advanced to the national tournament in 1964-66 at157 pounds, finishing 2nd in '64 and 5th in '65. Schimmel finished his career with a 94-9-1 record, won 4 Oregon Collegiate Conference championships , and 4 NAIA District 2 titles. He graduated with his MS in Education in 1968. In addition to wrestling, Schimmel excelled in football. In 1964, he rushed 270 yards against George Fox University -- holding the top rushing statistic in Mountaineer history at the time of his induction. After competing, Schimmel went on to be the EOU Assistant Wrestling Coach in 1968, and claimed the NAIA Division 2 Championship
