Hall of Fame
Under Hall of Fame coach Howard Fetz, Tolan garnished All-Conference, All-District, All-West Coast and All-American honors in just two years with the EOU baseball team, before being drafted by the Pittsburg Pirates in the fourth round. In 1980, he was named Team MVP.

Tolan studied education, and went on to earn master's degrees in education and administration. He received his master's degree in education from EOU along side his son, Jake. John has served as principal at Island City School for 14 years. All three of Tolan's children proudly attended EOU and were also student-athletes. Â Â
