WALLA WALLA, Wash. — After claiming an 8–6 lead in the seventh inning, the Mounties ultimately fell 10–9 to Whitman in 10 innings Tuesday night at Borleske Stadium. The Mountaineers collected 10 hits, stole seven bases, and took advantage of six Whitman errors but could not close out the non‑conference contest.
Carson Gerding paced the offense by going 4‑for‑4 with three RBIs, two steals, and a hit‑by‑pitch, while Mason Van Arsdall doubled twice, scored three runs, and reached safely four times. Pinch‑hitter Alex Olague added a run‑scoring single during a four‑run seventh that pushed Eastern Oregon in front, 8–6.
The Mountaineers struck first with two runs in the opening frame, then answered a three‑run Whitman third by plating two unearned runs in the fourth for a 4–4 tie. After the Blues moved ahead 6–4 in the sixth, Eastern Oregon erupted in the seventh. Brandon Taddy singled and scored on consecutive wild pitches, Olague's pinch‑hit single tied it, Gerding's fourth hit drove in Arsdall, and Arsdall later doubled to set up another run.
Whitman responded in the eighth when Halen Otte launched a three‑run homer to left, giving the Blues a 9–8 edge. Eastern Oregon forced extras in the ninth as Arsdall scored on a throwing error. In the 10th, the Mountaineers left the tiebreak runner at third, and in the bottom half Luke Malzewski, who began the inning on second, stole home after two intentional walks to hand reliever Trevor Baker the loss. Carl Moland‑Kovash earned the win with a scoreless top of the frame.
Eastern Oregon returns to Cascade Collegiate Conference play Friday, hosting Corban for a two‑game series at Optimist Field in La Grande.
