LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon erupted for 12 runs on 16 hits, including five home runs, to take down Whitman College 12–3 on Wednesday afternoon at Optimist Field.
The Mountaineers wasted no time jumping on the board with back-to-back solo home runs by Danny Burns and Greyson McDaniel in the first inning. McDaniel finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two homers, leading a potent offensive display by EOU.
After a scoreless second and third, Eastern Oregon poured on the offense, plating four in the fourth and five in the sixth. Trevor Baker went 2-for-2 with a walk, a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Alex Olague provided the big blow in the sixth inning with a three-run shot to center field. He totaled three RBIs and went 1-for-3.
Eight different Mountaineers recorded hits, including multi-hit efforts from Justin Frederick (2-for-3), Carson Gerding (2-for-3), and Easton Espinoza (2-for-5), who added a solo homer in the fourth. Mario Landeros also chipped in an RBI single in the sixth.
Sam McCauley tossed two shutout innings with four strikeouts. A mix of seven relievers combined to allow just three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.
Whitman was limited offensively until the seventh, when A. Romero, N. Korahais, and J. Chang each delivered RBI hits to bring in their only runs. The Blues were held to six hits overall and stranded 10 runners.
The Mountaineers return to action later this week. Conference play resumes in Eugene, Oregon, as they face the Bushnell Beacons in a doubleheader on Friday, the 28th, starting at 2 p.m.
