LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon baseball struggled to contain No. 20 Lewis-Clark State's offensive firepower Monday, dropping both games of a doubleheader at Optimist Field.
GAME ONE
In Game 1, the Warriors came out swinging, launching six home runs on their way to a dominant 22-4 victory over the Mountaineers. Lewis-Clark State struck early, with Charlie Updegrave hitting a two-run homer in the first inning. The visitors erupted for five more runs in the second, including a three-run blast from Jack Sheward. Eastern Oregon answered with a solo home run from Greyson McDaniel in the bottom half, but the Warriors continued their offensive onslaught.
Lewis-Clark State added five more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run homer from Bulla Ephan and a three-run shot from Jakob Marquez. Another four-run inning in the fourth, including Sheward's second home run of the game, pushed the lead to 16-2. The Warriors capped their performance with a three-run homer from Anthony Karagiannopoulos in the fifth and a two-run blast by Spencer Zeller in the seventh.
Mario Landeros provided a bright spot for the Mountaineers with a two-run homer in the seventh, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Jantzen Lucas (3-1) earned the win for Lewis-Clark State, allowing two earned runs on five hits over six innings with seven strikeouts. Danny Burns (3-3) took the loss for Eastern Oregon after surrendering seven runs in 1.2 innings.
GAME TWO
The Warriors wasted no time taking control of Game 2, scoring five runs in the first inning. Sheward's RBI single opened the scoring before Marquez added another run with a single through the right side. A bases-loaded walk to Dominic Signorelli and an RBI single by Noah Weintraub extended the lead to 4-0. A hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded plated one more run for a 5-0 advantage.
Eastern Oregon began chipping away in the second, as Trevor Baker singled to drive in Joey Weissenfels, and Landeros followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2. The Mountaineers put together a big fourth inning, starting with another RBI single from Baker. A double steal allowed Parker Cumberland to swipe home, cutting the deficit to one. Moments later, Mason Van Arsdall lined a single to left field, bringing home Baker and tying the game at 5-5.
Eastern Oregon took its first lead in the fifth when Baker delivered his third RBI of the game with a single to right center, scoring Weissenfels for a 6-5 advantage. However, Lewis-Clark State quickly responded in the sixth, reclaiming the lead on a two-run homer by Updegrave.
The Warriors put the game out of reach in the seventh, scoring six runs. Ike George started the rally with an RBI single, followed by another run-scoring hit from Updegrave. Marquez then delivered the crushing blow with a grand slam to right field, giving Lewis-Clark State a commanding 13-6 lead. The Warriors added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Abe Affholter.
Baker led Eastern Oregon offensively, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Landeros and Arsdall each drove in a run, while Cumberland scored twice. Will Seslar started on the mound, allowing six runs over 5.1 innings, while Jake Herrera (0-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs in relief.
For Lewis-Clark State, Updegrave had a big game, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run. Marquez drove in five, including the grand slam. Kolby Solomon (2-1) earned the win, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.
The Mountaineers will next host Whitman College at Optimist Field at 2:00 p.m. PT on Wednesday.
