SPOKANE, Wash. – Eastern Oregon University Track & Field had two athletes compete on Thursday and Friday in the heptathlon at the WSU Invitational in
TJ Davis and
Sam Roddewig. Both athletes put up quality marks and times to finish in the top-10 respectively.
Davis was the runner-up overall scoring 5,248 points. He was the top NAIA finisher and missed out on the win by just 35 points. For Roddewig, his second day efforts helped him secure a sixth place finish with 4,651 points. The duo held their own amongst a field of mostly NCAA Division I athletes.
Both point totals for Davis and Roddewig are NAIA B standard marks. For Davis, his point total currently leads the NAIA. Roddewig's point total is currently eighth highest.
For Davis, he scored three event wins over the two-day span. Two came on day one. He won the shot put with a throw of 42-0 ¾ and earned his second victory of the day in the high jump. He cleared the bar at a height of 6-4 on his third and final attempt. In the first event of the day, the 60-meter dash, Davis ran a 7.23 to finish second.
In the second event of the day, long jump, Davis secured a third place finish leaping 21-4 ¾. His day one wrapped up with the two first place wins which gave him the day one lead at 2,900 points. On day two, he finished second, sixth and first, respectively, in the final three events.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Davis ran a 8.36 to place second and maintained his overall lead. In the pole vault however, Davis had his lowest finish placing sixth with a height clearance of 13-5 ¼. His mark dropped him to second overall going into the final event. In the 1,000-meter run, Davis was superb with a winning time of 2:45.76, which was two second ahead of second.
Roddewig battled back on day two to finish sixth after finishing the first day at ninth overall. He had just one top-three finish on day one, but bounced back with two top-four finishes on the second day.
In the 60 dash, Roddewig ran a 7.51 to place ninth. He then grabbed a 10th place finish in long jump with a mark of 19-11 ¾. His lone top-three finish of day one was in the shot put. He heaved the rock 36-0 ¼ to place third. In the final event of the day, high jump, Roddewig tied for ninth clearing 5-8 ¾. He finished the day with 2,446 points.
Roddewig started day two with a 10th place finish in the 60 hurdles. He crossed the finish line in a time of 9.22. He bounced back in the pole vault finishing fourth with a height of 14-5 ¼. His finish pushed him up to seventh entering the final event. In the 1,000, Roddewig ran a 2:48.99 to secure a third place finish. His time moved him up one final spot for the overall sixth place finish.
The Mountaineers, as a team, wll be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Whitworth Invitational. Meet action will begin at 8 a.m. inside the Podium in Spokane, Wash.
