LA GRANDE, Ore. - No. 14 Eastern Oregon University Volleyball fell in its second conference of the weekend as the Mountaineers were swept, 3-0 (15-25, 21-25, 17-25), by No. 7 Corban University. With the loss, EOU falls to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
How it Happened
• Helping the Warriors (8-0, 2-0 CCC) in the win was a .209 hitting percentage and a defensive effort that held EOU to just .054 hitting on the night. The Warriors also had a 10-8 edge in blocks to secure the sweep.
• In the first set, Corban raced out to a 5-1 lead and never let EOU lead outside of a 1-0 start to the frame. The Warriors fast start was the difference in allowing them to hold the lead for the majority of the set.
• The Mountaineers got within three at 10-7 before a 7-4 surge by the Warriors made it a 17-11 game. The burst by Corban was enough to coast to the 10-point win as the Mountaineers were downed 25-15 in the opening frame. Six straight points by the Warriors closed out the set to give them the 1-0 lead.
• Corban led wire-to-wire in the second set to go ahead 2-0 overall against Eastern. The Warriors jumped ahead 10-6 before EOU closed the gap to 10-8. The Mountaineers eventually got within one, 14-13, to force a Corban timeout.
• Out of the timeout, the Warriors managed to push their lead back to four at 20-16. Eastern looked to make one last push and got within two again at 23-12 before falling 25-21 to go down 2-0.
• In the third, Corban raced out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back the rest of the set to secure the sweep. The Warriors held anywhere from a 2-4 point lead over the Mountaineers before going ahead by five, 16-11, at the midway part of the frame.Â
• Eastern never managed to get any closer than four points the rest of the set as the Warriors cruised to the 25-17 win to remain undefeated.
