Mountaineers Tame Lions in 3-0 Victory

PORTLAND - No. 14 Eastern Oregon University Volleyball made quick work of its opponent Friday night as the Mountaineers swept Multnomah University 3-0 (25-10, 25-8-25-6) on the road to push its win streak to four. With the victory, the Mountaineers improve to 10-4 on the year and are now 5-1 in conference play.

How it Happened
• The Mountaineers put on another offensive showcase with a .382 hitting percentage in the sweep, while their defense was a wall holding the Lions (2-5, 1-5 CCC) to a negative hitting percentage of -.048. Also helping EOU in the win was a 39-17 edge in kills, a 7-1 edge in service aces and a staggering 8-0 edge in blocks.
• In the opening frame, the Lions managed to grab the match lead early on at 2-0, but it was short lived as the Mountaineers forced a tie at 3-all before going ahead 5-3. From then on, EOU was in the driver seat and never relinquished the lead.
• The Mountaineers pushed ahead to a 12-7 advantage on a service ace from Alexis McMurtrey that forced an MU timeout. Out of the break, Eastern continued to apply pressure on offense and the lead for the team eventually grew to 10 points at 20-10. MU never scored again and fell by 15 in the set, 25-10.
• In the early going of the second set, the Lions managed to keep things close and were tied with EOU at 3-3. The Mountaineers once again surged on offense and blew their lead open to 8-3 before MU was able to score again.
• Despite the efforts by MU, they never managed to close the gap. It was a 16-7 game when an attack error by the Mounties made it a 16-8 score, but the Lions never mustered another point the rest of the frame. EOU closed out the set with a 9-0 run to win 25-8 and go ahead 2-0.
• In the third and final set, the Mountaineers raced out to an 8-0 lead before the Lions managed to score a point. In the surge, EOU forced MU to burn both timeouts, but it made no difference.
• The Lions only put up five more points the rest of the frame as a flurry of runs by the Mountaineers simply overpowered the opposition. The quick start by EOU was the difference as the team secured the 25-6 win and won in straight sets.
