CALDWELL, Idaho - The sweeps continue for 14th-ranked Mountaineers Volleyball as they started their five-game road trip with a convincing win over College of Idaho Tuesday night. Eastern Oregon won in straight sets for the third straight match taking down the Coyotes 25-22, 25-14, and 25-11. With the win, EOU improves to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
How it Happened
• The Mountaineers put on an offensive showcase hitting .314 in the win, while their defense impressed once again holding C of I (4-9, 1-4 CCC) to just a .054 clip on the night.
• On the front row, Eastern denied the Yotes 10 times in the match and limited their offense to under 10 kills in the final two sets. EOU finished the match with the edge in kills at 39-30, while a 10-3 advantage in blocks was key in the sweep.
• The opening set was the closest despite the Mountaineers maintaining a wire-to-wire lead. EOU raced out to a 5-0 lead to force a Yotes timeout but it made no difference as the Mounties jumped ahead 8-0 before C of I finally got on the board.Â
•
Madison Morgan and
Sade Williams paced the Mountaineers offense in their 8-0 run to start the match as the duo combined for five kills. Despite the fast start by Eastern, C of I slowly managed to chip away at the lead to make things interesting late in the frame.
• Midway through the set, the Mountaineers led 16-10 and maintained a 5-6 point lead until late. It was a 20-15 game in the first set before a 3-0 surge by the Yotes cut the Mountaineers' lead to just two, 20-18.
• EOU called timeout to slow the momentum and it was enough to hold off the Yotes potential comeback. A kill from Williams closed out the set, 25-22, to put EOU up 1-0. Both teams finished with 15 kills but a .220-.140 edge in hitting was the difference in the win for the Mountaineers.
• Following a close battle in the opening set, EOU never allowed the Yotes to gain momentum again the rest of the night. Set No. 2, along with the third, belong to Eastern as the team rolled to a pair of double figure wins.Â
• C of I managed to grab the lead at the start of the second set, 1-0, but it was short lived as the Mountaineers ripped off six-straight points to go ahead 6-1. The Yotes called timeout, but out of the break they mustered just two points and surrendered seven to open the score up to 13-3.
• Helping open up the Mountaineers lead to 10 points was another 6-0 run. Morgan and Williams continued their high level of play and had help as
Cambree Scott accounted for three kills in the Mountaineers strong start.
• The Yotes never managed to get any closer than eight points the rest of the second set and that gap did not come until late. Eastern led 21-9 before a last minute 4-0 surge by C of I made it a 21-13 game. EOU then closed the door by surrendering just one more point before taking the set, 25-14.
• 13 kills in the set allowed the Mountaineers to go ahead 2-0 and their defense held the Yotes to a negative hitting percentage of -.057. On the slip side, EOU hit .303 in the set and it was still not their best percentage of the night.
• The third and final set was an efficient one for the Mountaineers who tallied just 11 kills, but hit a staggering .579 in the frame to cruise to the 14-point win. Defensively, they held the Yotes to under a .100 clip at .069 and allowed just eight kills.
• Mirroring what they did in the second set, the Mountaineers used another fast start to distance themselves from the Yotes with an 11-2 lead. The set was tied at 2-all early on but it did not last long as a 9-0 run by Eastern opened up the score and the team never looked back.
• By the midway point, EOU held a commanding lead at 15-5. Their fast start was too much to overcome as the Yotes managed just six more points the rest of the frame before succumbing to the 25-11 defeat and falling 3-0 in the match.
