LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon Baseball dropped the opening two games of its series against No. 5 Lewis-Clark State, falling 16-6 in game one and 10-2 in game two.
Game 1
Lewis-Clark State jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Izzy Madariaga and a run by Bryce Johnson on a wild pitch. Despite additional traffic on the bases, Eastern limited further damage.
The Warriors continued to build their lead with solo home runs from Brandon Nguyen and Johnson, while Nguyen added another leadoff blast in the fourth to make it 6-0.
Eastern struggled offensively early, managing just one hit through the first four innings before
Tommy Whiles put the Mountaineers on the board with a solo home run in the fifth.
LCSC responded in the sixth, stringing together an RBI single and a three-run homer from Noah Weintraub to extend the lead to 10-1. Eastern answered in the bottom half with a three-run homer by
Alex Olague, cutting the deficit to 10-4.
The Warriors added three more runs in the eighth, but the Mountaineers countered with two runs on a pair of hits and a walk to make it 13-6. LCSC sealed the game in the ninth with three runs on consecutive singles, while limiting Eastern to just one baserunner in the final frame to secure the 16-6 win.
Evan Canfield (6-1) earned the victory after five innings, striking out five.
Easton Corey (2-6) took the loss for Eastern.
Game 2
Game two opened in unusual fashion, with both teams hitting a home run on the first pitch of the game from Nyguen and Nagler. The Warriors followed with a two-run shot later in the inning to take an early 3-1 lead.
After two scoreless frames, Lewis-Clark added three runs on three hits to extend its advantage, then pushed the lead to 7-1 in the fifth on another solo homer from Madariaga.
Eastern got one back in the sixth after Whiles was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a groundout by
Kai Brown. That would be the Mountaineers' final run of the game.
Following a one-hour lightning delay, play resumed with LCSC adding insurance in the eighth to put the game out of reach and secure the 10-2 victory.
Mason Goodson (5-1) picked up the win, allowing one run over 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. Jordan Lennartson recorded his fourth save, also striking out five.
