KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - No. 14 Eastern Oregon University Volleyball picked up its sixth straight win on Friday night as the Mountaineers defeated Oregon Tech, 3-1 (17-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-18). With the win, EOU improves to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
How it Happened
• The Mountaineers managed to just outhit the Hustlin' Owls (9-4, 5-3 CCC) .163-.138 in the win, but OIT had the edge in kills at 56-44. Helping the Mounties in the win was a commanding 19-3 advantage in blocks.
• In the opening set, neither squad hit the ball well as OIT hit .077 and EOU was at a .067 clip. The Hustlin' Owls had just one more kill at 10-9. A 7-1 start by OIT was key in the team's 25-17 opening set win.
• The fast start by OIT forced a quick timeout by Eastern who played from behind the majority of the set. The Hustlin' Owls managed to push their lead to 11-6 before a 4-0 run by EOU closed the gap at 11-10. A pair of kills by
Preslee Jensen helped EOU get within one.
• Eastern managed just seven more points against OIT the rest of the frame. The Owls jumped ahead to a 23-15 lead late before two kills by
Sade Williams scored EOU's final two points. OIT ended the set with a pair of kills to go ahead 1-0.
• Set No. 2 required extra points as the Mountaineers tied the match at 1-all with a 27-25 win. The two squads traded points early on before EOU created some space with a 13-8 lead that forced OIT to call timeout. Four kills from
Breanna Shaffer paced the Mounties to help them go ahead five.Â
• OIT battled back into the frame and retook the lead at the midway point, 16-15. From then on, neither squad managed to lead by more than two until late. The Hustlin' Owls grabbed a 24-21 lead but three straight points by the Mounties tied the set at 24-all.
• Late attack and service errors by the Hustlin' Owls helped the Mountaineers stay in the set. An attack error by OIT gave EOU a 26-25 edge before a kill by
Madison Morgan closed out the set and knotted the match at a tie.
• Momentum from the second set win carried into the third for the Mountaineers as they surged ahead 7-3 early on to force an OIT timeout. A kill from
Cambree Scott and Morgan got the EOU offense going along with the help of attack errors from OIT.
• The Hustlin' Owls did not allow the Mountaineers to create more separation and used a 4-1 run to cut their deficit to one at 8-7. EOU pushed its lead to 11-7 on a 4-0 run again before OIT closed the gap to one point at 11-10.
• EOU grabbed its largest lead at 16-11 and it seemed the team had finally seized control of the set. OIT responded once more and made it a 16-15 game before tying the frame up at 21-all. The Hustlin' Owls mustered just one more point though as two kills and a block from Williams were key in ending the set to put EOU up 2-1.
• The fourth set belonged to the Mountaineers as they took down OIT 25-18 to finish off the match. Another fast start was key in the win for EOU as the Mounties jumped ahead 9-4 early on. Eastern never allowed the Hustlin' Owls to get any closer than three points the rest of the set.
• The Hustlin' Owls' closest gap after going down five to start the match was at the 10-7 mark but EOU took control and played stout defense to cruise to the seven-point win. Midway through the frame, the Mountaineers held a 16-10 lead.
• The Mountaineers pushed their lead to 20-14 late in the fourth set to force OIT to call timeout but it made little difference. The Hustlin' Owls managed four more points but it was the arm of Scott that ended the set at 25-18 to give EOU win No. 12 of the year.
