KIRKLAND, Wash. - Mountaineers Volleyball got back on track Friday night with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-21, 25-12) over Northwest University on the road. With the win, Eastern Oregon improves to 23-6 on the year and is now 18-3 in conference play.
How it Happened
• Defense was key up front for the Mountaineers as they racked up 12 blocks to just five by the Eagles (12-14, 11-10 CCC).
• Offensively, EOU hit just .190 in the win but held Northwest to under a .100 attack clip at .034 thanks to the work up front.
• Northwest raced out to a 6-2 lead on the Mountaineers, but it did not hold up as Eastern slowly chipped away at the lead to get within one at 10-9.
• The Eagles managed to stay in front until the midway point of the set as the Mountaineers managed to tie things up at 14-all.
• The two squads traded points until it was a 20-20 tie late in the frame. EOU then held the Eagles to just one more and closed out the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-21 and take the 1-0 lead.
• Another fast start paced Northwest in the second set but it was once a late rally by the Mountaineers that allowed them to pick up a repeat win of 25-21.
• The Eagles led 5-3 to start and pushed their lead to 10-6. EOU looked to stay close but midway through the set, Northwest led 16-12 and forced a Mountaineers timeout.
• The lead for Northwest grew to 19-13 out of the break but it did not last for long. The Mountaineers pieced together a 10-1 run to grab the lead late, 23-20, on the Eagles.
• Northwest tried to slow the run when it was 3-0 with a timeout but the short break made no difference as EOU made it a 5-0 run before Northwest scored a point.
• The 10-1 surge was too much to overcome for the Eagles who mustered just one more point before falling by four. With the 2-0 lead, EOU was dominant in the match's final set.
• This time it was the Mountaineers that got off to a fast start in the third, 6-0, and they did not let the lead slip away at any point.
• The Eagles managed to get within four at 8-4, but it was short lived as a 7-0 run by Eastern opened the team's lead up to 11, 15-4.
• The quick start and scoring surge by EOU was enough as the Eagles only managed to score in small pockets before succumbing to a 25-12 defeat and a 3-0 sweep.
