EOU Announces Hiring of Mike McInerney as Head Baseball Coach

LA GRANDE, Ore. – With the exciting rejuvenation of the baseball program for the 2021 season, Eastern Oregon director of athletics Anji Weissenfluh has announced the hiring of Mike McInerney as head coach.

McInerney becomes the first head coach for the Mountaineer baseball program since it was cut in 2006. Now 13 years later, EOU baseball gets set to return under the guidance of McInerney, who travels across the state to La Grande after spending the past eight years as Associate Head Baseball Coach at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

"I am excited to announce Mike McInerney as our new baseball coach," said Weissenfluh. "Mike has been an instrumental part of the success of the Western Oregon baseball program, and I am excited for him to begin rebuilding the baseball program at EOU."

At Western Oregon, McInerney was primarily the pitching coach, where he enjoyed great success. The WOU pitching staff was the team's strong point annually. Under McInerney's guidance over the last eight years, Western Oregon had 10 players drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and 21 professional contracts signed. In 2019, Western Oregon had four draft picks and one professional signing, the most of any school in NCAA Division II.

"I am really excited about the opportunity to be at EOU and to restart a historic baseball program. I'd like to thank President Insko, Anji Weissenfluh and the hiring committee for giving me this incredible opportunity. My family and I are enthused to join this great university and community and I can't wait to get started."

WOU has been one of the top Division II baseball teams in the northwest since McInerney's arrival in 2012, posting an overall record of 153-58 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) while winning the GNAC title in five of the last eight years. Overall, the team has garnered six All-Americans and 29 All-Region players since 2012. The Wolves have also produced the GNAC Pitcher of the Year in four of the last six seasons.

"A proven recruiter, Coach McInerney will use his strong ties and connections to the Pacific Northwest to bring in quality student-athletes who will succeed on the field and in the classroom," said Weissenfluh. "Mike is a man of high character who will be a role model of the NAIA Champions of Character Live 5 initiative and the core values of the Eastern Oregon University athletic department. I am excited for the future of EOU baseball under the leadership of Coach McInerney."

McInerney played collegiately at Lassen Community College and Missouri Western University. While at Missouri Western, he helped lead the program to its first regional appearance in school history and graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 2007.

Work will begin immediately for McInerney, who will look to make his first signings for the program in the near future while adding to his coaching staff as he prepares to build the team for the 2021 campaign.
