Jessy Watson Named EOU's 4th Head Men’s Soccer Coach

LA GRANDE, Ore. – An assistant coach since the program's inception in 2015, Jessy Watson has now been named the fourth head men's soccer coach in program history, director of athletics Anji Weissenfluh announced Thursday.

Watson has seen the growth of the Eastern Oregon men's soccer program since it began five seasons ago and been an integral part of its success on and off the field.

"I am excited to announce Jessy Watson as our new men's soccer coach," said Weissenfluh. "Jessy is no stranger to EOU or the La Grande community and he gives our men's program needed stability."

Watson helped lead the Mountaineers to a pair of outstanding years the last two seasons. In 2018, EOU had its best Cascade Collegiate Conference record of 8-2-3, earning the program's first trip to the conference postseason tournament as the No. 4 seed. There, the team picked up its first postseason victory ever, a 2-0 win over Providence.

Just this season, the Mountaineers had one of their wildest years. After a slow start, the Blue and Gold rolled off five-straight wins to end the regular season, advancing to the CCC tournament for a second year in a row. There, the Mounties won back-to-back games in penalty kick shootouts and earned the conference's second auto bid to the NAIA Championships for the first time in program history.

"It is with great humility and extreme honor to be chosen as EOU's next head coach," said Watson. "The opportunity to invest in our student-athletes and the community, is one that I welcome. This is only the beginning of a new journey that will have many challenges, full of opportunities to grow and learn. I look forward to working with and investing in our student-athletes, EOU and region. I want to thank our President, Tom Insko, and our athletic director, Anji Weissenfluh, for this opportunity. I will work tirelessly to continue building a program that all can be proud of."

From 2007-09, Watson served as the head coach for the EOU women's soccer team. In addition, he has been the franchise owner of the La Grande Dominos since 2005. His connections to the community and his soccer ties locally and nationally will be a major asset to the program.

Watson holds numerous coaching licenses from the National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association, including a National Diploma (2006), Advanced National Diploma (2006), Premiere Diploma (2008), Futsal level I (2016), and a Technical Development Topics Diploma (2017).

From 1990-94, Watson served in the Marines and played for the All-Marine soccer team, and he also coached a unit team to the Okinawan Island Championship in '92. In 1995, Watson played one season in the SoCal Premier League.

EOU men's soccer will move into its sixth year with stability and expectations to continue building upon the last two seasons.
