From Eastern Oregon to the World Stage: Samson Abraham’s Journey as a Deaf Athlete

LA GRANDE, Ore. - For student-athlete Samson Abraham, the path to international competition has been defined by resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to growth. As a member of the U.S. Deaf Men's National Team, Abraham recently represented his country on one of the biggest stages in international sport: the Deaflympics.

Abraham's journey as a deaf athlete in competitive soccer has required him to develop a unique approach to the game. Relying heavily on visual awareness, he has sharpened his ability to read body language, anticipate movement, and react instinctively.

"My journey's been about adapting, learning fast, and trusting my strengths," Abraham said. "I've learned to read the game quicker, pick up on body language, and react without overthinking. That's helped me play smarter and stay composed."

His talent first gained national attention following a standout freshman season at Gallaudet University. That performance led to an invitation to a U.S. Deaf Men's National Team training camp in Atlanta in 2024—an opportunity he seized.

From there, Abraham's rise continued onto the international stage, where he described representing the United States as both humbling and deeply personal.
"Wearing the USA crest wasn't just about playing soccer—it felt like carrying my family, friends, and everyone who's supported me along the way," he said. "Every time I stepped on the field, I thought about the people who've helped me get here."

At the Deaflympics, Abraham and his teammates faced elite global competition, navigating a challenging slate of matches against Ukraine, Korea, Brazil, Japan, and France. The team ultimately secured a fourth-place finish—the highest in program history—marking a significant milestone for the United States. "The level of competition didn't disappoint," Abraham noted. "Every team brought energy, effort, and heart to fight for a medal."

While the on-field experience was unforgettable, Abraham's most meaningful moment came off the field—having his mother in attendance throughout the tournament. Traveling from Seattle, it was the first time she had seen him play in person since his high school days.
"Honestly, my favorite moment was having my mom at all my games," Abraham said. "She flew all the way from Seattle—first time she'd seen me play in person since high school. Just seeing her there cheering me on meant so much, and I'm forever grateful for her. It made every game feel even more special."

Like many deaf athletes, Abraham has faced challenges, particularly in communication. However, he credits both his adaptability and the support of teammates and coaches for turning potential obstacles into strengths.
"I use hand gestures, quick signs, and visual cues to understand coaches and teammates," he explained. "They meet me halfway, and once the game starts, we all know our roles. We play as one unit."

Now competing for Eastern Oregon University, Abraham has continued to develop both his skill set and mindset. Having recently joined the Mountaineers, he emphasized the program's culture of accountability and discipline as instrumental in his growth.
"Nothing's handed to you—you have to earn your spot, your minutes, and your respect," he said. "That environment has helped shape my mentality and work ethic."

Abraham also credits EOU's diverse roster and competitive success—including an undefeated conference season—for elevating his game IQ and preparing him for international play.

"Being around teammates from different cultures and soccer backgrounds pushed me to adapt fast and see the game differently," he said. "Bringing that mindset to the Deaflympics helped me stay composed, confident, and ready to compete."

As Abraham looks ahead, his journey continues with the Mountaineers as the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers men's soccer prepare for their upcoming spring season. With momentum from international competition and a strengthened mindset, Abraham is poised to make an immediate impact as the team returns to the pitch.

From La Grande to the global stage, he continues to represent both his university and his country with pride—while inspiring others along the way.
