LA GRANDE, Ore. — Eastern Oregon University Women's Soccer earned a pair of
Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Week honors following a dramatic 1-0 upset victory over No. 4-ranked College of Idaho, with freshman
Samantha Gjersvold earning Offensive Player of the Week and freshman
Calie Hitt being named Defensive Player of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week
Gjersvold, a freshman forward from Yorba Linda, Calif., delivered the decisive moment in EOU's upset of the fourth-ranked Yotes.
With the match scoreless in the 39th minute, Gjersvold found the back of the net on a long-range shot that sailed over the College of Idaho goalkeeper and gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. The goal proved to be the game-winner as EOU held on for the shutout victory over one of the top teams in the conference.
Gjersvold's finish provided the only goal of the match and helped the Mountaineers secure a statement victory at home.
Defensive Player of the Week
Hitt, a freshman defender from Apple Valley, Calif., anchored an EOU defensive unit that turned in a standout performance against the fourth-ranked Yotes.
The Mountaineers held College of Idaho to just two shots on goal and six total shots throughout the match, with Hitt playing a key role in limiting the Yotes' attacking opportunities. She also came up with a game-saving block in the first half, helping keep College of Idaho off the scoreboard and preserve EOU's lead.
Hitt's defensive effort helped EOU secure its shutout victory over the No. 4-ranked Yotes and capped a complete team performance on both sides of the ball. Gjersvold and Hitt's performances helped lead the Mountaineers to one of their biggest victories of the season, as EOU handed College of Idaho their first conference loss and now sit tied atop the CCC standings.
Gjersvold, Hitt and the Mountaineers return to action this weekend, hosting Rocky Mountain College Friday and Carroll College Saturday.
