Mountaineers’ Upset of No. 4 Yotes Earns Team of the Week Honors

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Following a statement victory over the No. 4 College of Idaho, Eastern Oregon University Women's Soccer has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Under Armour Team of the Week.

The Mountaineers came into Friday evening's matchup determined to earn redemption after falling to the Yotes in a double-overtime thriller in last season's CCC Tournament Championship—and they did just that.

Facing the No. 4-ranked Yotes as an unranked team, Eastern Oregon came out firing and quickly took control of the match. Samantha Gjersvold provided the breakthrough in the 39th minute, launching a long-range strike that sailed just over the head of the Yotes' goalkeeper to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. That goal proved to be the difference, as EOU's defense held strong for the remainder of the match to secure the upset victory. Eastern Oregon controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting the Yotes 14-6 and holding a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

With the win, the Mountaineers snapped College of Idaho's undefeated conference season and handed the Yotes just their second loss of the season overall. The victory also marked EOU's first win over College of Idaho in the teams' last eight meetings. The two teams now sit tied atop of the conference standings, each holding a 4-1 CCC record.

The Mountaineers will look to build on the momentum when they return to action Friday, Oct. 9, hosting Rocky Mountain College at 4 p.m. PT.
