SALEM, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University (RV) Women's Soccer dominated Friday evening, defeating Corban University 2-0 on the road while holding the Warriors to just one shot over 90 minutes of play.
The Mountaineers took control early, quickly gaining possession and working their way toward the goal.
Gracie Rainsberry recorded the first shot of the match just under three minutes in, then doubled her chances a few minutes later, narrowly missing the target on both attempts. Nearly 12 minutes into the match,
Cassidy Harding found the back of the net off a pass from
Samantha Jones for her third goal of the season, giving EOU an early 1-0 lead.
Eastern continued to apply pressure, firing off shots and forcing saves from Corban goalkeeper Jordyn Labajo, while the Warriors' defense also came up with several blocks. The Mountaineers recorded seven additional shots throughout the remainder of the first half, with nearly every attempt coming from a different EOU player, taking a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Eastern came out of halftime with the same intensity, as Rainsberry opened the second-half attack with an early shot that sailed just wide. The Mountaineers then earned back-to-back corner kicks, with
Samantha Gjersvold sending her attempt toward the back post. Rainsberry finished the play, putting the ball into the back of the net to extend EOU's lead to 2-0. Eastern Oregon remained in control for the remainder of the match, adding four more shots while forcing two saves from Labajo and another defensive block. The Mountaineers also earned two additional corner kicks as they maintained their two-goal advantage through the final whistle.
Corban's lone shot of the match came in the 31st minute, with Eastern goalkeeper
Samantha Groesbeck making the save to preserve the clean sheet. The shutout was secured with the help of a standout defensive effort from the Mountaineers.
Eastern Oregon outshot Corban 18-1, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal, while holding a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. Rainsberry led the offensive effort with six shots, including two on goal, and a goal. Harding followed with two shots, both on goal, and a goal.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 7-1-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Eastern Oregon will continue its road swing tomorrow evening at Bushnell University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. PT.
