OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon women's wrestling team delivered a strong showing at the Evergreen Open, highlighted by two individual champions and four additional podium finishes. Leading the way for the Mountaineers were tournament champions
Kiona Michel at 207 pounds and
Paige Allen at 160 pounds.
Michel claimed the heavyweight title after receiving two byes to open the tournament. In her first match of the day, she secured a quick 47 second fall over Western Washington's Marion Harmsen before pinning UNLV's Jordan Hunter in 1:27 in the finals.
Allen captured the 160 championship in an unconventional path. She opened up the tournament with a 1:12 pin over Washington State's Elli Kashi, then received three injury default victories to claim the title with just one match wrestled.
At 117 pounds, Diaz and Coronado turned in impressive performances. Diaz recorded three quick first period falls – 0:58, 1:50, and 0:17. Coronado finished with a 10-0 technical fall and two pins (1:17 and 4:40) before reaching the finals. The two Mountaineers were set to face each other in the championship bout, but the match was not contested, resulting in both Diaz and Coronado sharing 2nd place.
Veil Foreman earned a runner-up finish at 145 pounds, advancing to the finals with a 10-0 technical fall over Univ. of Washington's Angela Santiago Ramirez and pins over London Houston and Pacific's Skyelynn Ripley. Foreman finished second after falling to Amelia Lecas (Simon Frasier) in the championship matchup.
Mallory Lusco rounded out the placers at 207 pounds with fourth place finish. After two opening byes, Lusco earned a 15-2 technical fall over Talina Hall (Eastern Washington) before concluding the tournament with two forfeit losses.
The Mountaineers now turn their attention to the Warrior Open, scheduled for January 23–24 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
