Tyree and Monaghan Home Runs Lift Mounties Over Thunderbirds

PENDLETON, Ore. — The Eastern Oregon Mountaineers delivered a strong performance on Friday, securing a doubleheader win over the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. The Mountaineers won game one 2-0, followed by a 5-3 victory in game two.

Game One: Eastern Oregon 2, British Columbia 0

Game One was a tight contest, with both teams struggling to break through offensively. The score remained tied at 0-0 through the first four innings, with Eastern Oregon and British Columbia both putting together solid defensive performances.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Mountaineers broke the deadlock with a two-run rally. Emily Barry's double to right center scored Katelynn Evans, giving EOU a 2-0 lead. From there, Mountaineer pitcher Kylie Parsons kept the Thunderbirds off the board, delivering a shutout performance with dominant pitching. British Columbia's offense failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, and the Mountaineers held on to win 2-0.

Game Two: Eastern Oregon 5, British Columbia 3

The second game was another battle. In the fifth inning, Han Tyree delivered once again, hitting a two-run home run to right center that scored Kelsey Evans and gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead. However, UBC fought back in the sixth inning, tying the game at 2-2 with an RBI single by Sever and another timely hit from Kelsey Nordquist.

The Thunderbirds briefly took a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning when Kelsey Ainge's single scored Nordquist. But the Mountaineers were not done. In the bottom of the eighth, Kelly Monaghan launched a three-run homer to right field, scoring Grace Spencer and Kallan Bordwell Gray, giving EOU a 5-3 lead and securing the win.

Natalie Dimitrov started the game and threw five solid innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Taylor Brewer (2-0) came in for relief, earning the win with three shutout innings, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out four.

Monaghan finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Han Tyree also had a strong game, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs from her home run. For UBC, Nordquist went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Sever contributed with two hits, including an RBI.

The Mountaineers will look to keep their momentum going as they continue the series with UBC starting tomorrow at 11 a.m. back at Peggy Anderson Field in La Grande, weather permitting.
