FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon women's wrestler
Isabella Coronado captured the 117-pound title at the Mike Clock Open on Saturday, November 8, hosted by Pacific University. The Mountaineers had a strong showing overall, placing seven wrestlers on the podium as Top-6 finishers inside the Stoller Center.
At 117 pounds,
Isabella Coronado went a perfect 4-0 to claim the championship. She opened the day with a 2:45 fall over Umpqua's Ortiz and advanced by disqualification in her second bout. Coronado then rolled to an 11-0 tech fall against Simon Fraser's Prasad before edging teammate and No. 15-ranked
Gloria Diaz in a thrilling 5-4 decision for the title.
Despite the loss in the final,
Gloria Diaz turned in a strong performance to take second place. Diaz collected two lightning-fast pins (0:41 and 0:33) and a 10-0 tech fall on her way to the championship match.
Nia Avelino, ranked No. 13 nationally in the NAIA, battled her way to a third-place finish in the 110-pound bracket. After receiving a first-round bye, Avelino edged Evergreen's Salas in a tight 8-5 decision. She dropped her next match but bounced back with a dominant 10-0 tech fall over Southwestern Oregon's Brewer. Avelino then pinned Evergreen's Wallway in 1:09 to secure the bronze.
Sitlaly Macias earned a podium finish at 138 pounds, placing sixth. Macias opened with an 11-0 tech fall before dropping her next match, then rebounded with another 11-0 tech fall and a 2:46 pin. Though she fell in her final two bouts, her early dominance secured her a spot among the top six.
At 145 pounds, Velasco battled her way to a third-place finish. After a first-round bye, she pinned her opening opponent in 2:09. Following a setback in her second match, Velasco came roaring back, earning a 0:44 fall over an unattached opponent (Juzenaite) before pinning teammate No. 18
Veil Foreman in 4:58 to claim third.
Veil Foreman also put together a strong tournament, finishing fourth. After dropping her first match, Foreman rattled off four straight wins — including three pins (0:38, 0:56, 1:56) — before falling to Velasco in the 3rd-place bout.
Mallory Lusco rounded out EOU's placers, taking fifth at 207 pounds. After a first-round bye, Lusco fell 12-0 to Simpson's Pesole, but recovered with a 12-4 victory over Treasure Valley's Baker. She then dropped her next match but closed strong, pinning Southwestern Oregon's Boling in 1:33 to finish fifth.
Eastern will continue their season November 23rd at the Spokane Open.
