CORVALLIS, Ore. – Eastern Oregon's own Darby McDevitt was named the 2023-24 Cascade Collegiate Conference Champions of Character of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
McDevitt played a crucial role in the Eastern Oregon soccer program, leaving a significant mark on the La Grande community during her time as a Mountie. Putting in work on and off the field, the senior holds three CCC Academic All-Conference honors and has been recognized twice as an NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete. Engaging in an internship within EOU's Human Performance Department, she contributed to organizing one of the campus's largest events, the Stress Less Event, which involves various community members and businesses offering diverse activities for students. Darby led efforts in securing raffle prizes from businesses, coordinating volunteers, and managing food arrangements. Additionally, she supported EOU's Walk for LIFE program, promoting exercise and community interaction among students, athletes, faculty, staff, and locals.
On the field, she stands out as an All-CCC team member, competing in 15 games for the Mountaineers this season. McDevitt led the squad's defense this season, also contributing two goals on the season in back-to-back games against Evergreen State and Rocky Mountain.
"Darby is one of the hardest-working people I have ever met, which can be seen through her success on and off the field," said Head Coach Josh Goodman. "She has the unique quality of uplifting everyone around her, making them better in the process while also being extremely kind."
The annual award recognizes one male and one female athlete who represent the five aspects of the Champions of Character – Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership. The award is voted on by the conference athletic directors based on nominations from member schools.
