BROOKINGS, S.D. – Eastern Oregon had a historic day to wrap up the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Brookings, South Dakota. Three Mounties,
Lauryn Mitchell,
Hunter Nichols and
Tanner Nett, all earned All-American honors in their events. Nett made history as the first EOU men's thrower to garner All-American status in the shot put in either indoor or outdoor track and field. With the three day meet officially over the women came in 34th place with 7 points and the men came in 39th place with 6 points.
WOMEN
The Mounties had three competitors on day three of the championships which consisted mostly of track event finals and the second half of the field events.
On the track it was
Lauryn Mitchell who capped off an impressive indoor season with a fourth-place finish in the 600-meter run. Mitchell's time of 1:34.38 shaved even more time off her PR set a day ago and earned her All-American honors in the event. Perhaps most impressive was her path to the podium. She made it to the championships earning a provisional bid and took advantage of the opportunity finishing fourth in the nation.
In the field events
Maggie Ledbetter returned to action in the women's shot put. Ledbetter, a day after becoming an All-American in the weight throw put up solid mark of 13.86 meters which was good for tenth place. Ledbetter narrowly missed out on the finals and her second All-American finish.
Elizabeth Grandle also returned to action this time in the high jump. Grandle performed well finishing ninth in the event, just one jump short of becoming an All-American. A missed jump at the opening mark of 1.59 meters was the deciding factor as she cleared 1.64 meters with Central Methodist's Delaney Miller who edged out Grandle for the final All-American spot with one less miss.
MEN
Eastern was two for two with placers on the men's side.
Hunter Nichols and
Tanner Nett each found their way to the podium earning All-American status.
On the track
Hunter Nichols hung with the best in the nation finishing in seventh place in the men's 1,000-meter run. A stacked field with multiple All-Americans pushed the pace early and Nichols stuck with them posting a time of 2:28.61. For Nichols, the seventh place finish earned him his second career All-American award.
Eastern finished the meet on a high note as
Tanner Nett unleashed a record breaking throw in the men's shot put. On his fifth throw the sophomore broke his own school record set at the beginning of this season with a mark of 16.48 meters finishing in fifth place. Nett's podium finish made history as he is the first men's thrower to ever earn All-American status in the shot put in either indoor or outdoor track and field for the Mountaineers.
