Mounties Battle Bearcats to 2-0 Start

Hoskins Throws No-Hitter in Season Debut

SALEM, Ore. - Season opener nerves settled in as the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (2-0) took on the Willamette Bearcats (0-2) for the first series of the 2023 season. Mounties took game one  3-1 in a slow start as both teams combined for 9 hits total. The Mounties settled in and took game two 8-0 as they found their groove at the plate and rode the arm of Kaylie Hoskins to a no-hitter .  Next up for Eastern is a double header at Pacific University on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.

GAME 1
A cloudy day in Salem caused both teams to have a slow start, but the Mounties were able to take game one with a 3-1 win. The Mounties and Bearcats battled to get the first hit which did not come until the bottom of the 3rd by Willamette's Faith Collar. Eastern opened the 4th inning swinging when Camryn Willer, Kelly Monaghan, and Haley Ebner all made contact to get on base. Caitlin Crist then smacked a double to bring Haley Ebner and Monaghan in to put the Mounties up 2-0. Brianne Majors found home for the Bearcats in the bottom of the fourth. EOU stayed hot in the fifth as Karsyn Zaragoza and Hannah Tyree each got a hit, and Zaragoza was able to bring in a run for the Mounties. The following two innings were a defensive battle as no errors were made, and only one hit came about with no runs scored and one left on base.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES  
GAME 2
Multiple Mounties started to get comfortable at the plate as they snagged 10 hits to secure a first day sweep against the Bearcats in a 8-0 win. Kelly Monaghan and Adison Ribordy each went 2-2 at the plate. Kaylie Hoskins started her EOU season in the circle with a no-hitter tallying 11 strikeouts to keep the bearcats scoreless in 5 innings. Eastern also had another great defensive game as they ended game two with no errors. Caitlin Crist was quick on her feet again snagging 2 more stolen bases. For the Bearcats Abigial Loomis had 5 strikeouts on the mound.
