JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Mountaineer Women's Wrestling made some more history Saturday afternoon as they put up their best finish in program history at the NAIA National Invite, placing 10th. Eastern Oregon scored 75.5 points over the two-day span to record their highest finish ever on the national stage.
Along with the best finish the team has ever had, Eastern is bringing home its second ever NAIA National Runner-Up in
Olivia Robinson. The sophomore placed second at 170 pounds, joining
Erin Redford as the only other top-three finisher at the NAIA National Invite.
Also making an impact in the Mountaineers top-10 finish was the efforts of
Macy Higa,
Kaylee Moore, and
Morgan Shines. The trio, along with Robinson, secured All-America status by making it to day two and were key in scoring points for EOU as a whole.
Higa picked up her second NAIA All-American honor placing fourth at 123 pounds. Moore and Shines both finished eighth at 130 pounds and 143 pounds, respectively. For all four wrestlers, their finishes were all higher than their respective NAIA ranking heading into the weekend. Robinson was ranked sixth, while Higa and Moore both ranked 13th. Shines went into Nationals unranked.
For Robinson, she entered day two with a 2-0 record and went 1-1 to finish at 3-1 overall for the weekend. In both of her matches, Robinson faced opponents from the University of Cumberlands. In the semifinal bout, she scored a 6-4 decision over Chamira Cooper to punch her ticket to the championship. In the finals, Robinson battled but came up short in a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Dymond Guilford. She finishes the 2021-22 campaign with a 24-5 record and as the CCC Champion at 170 pounds, while bringing home her first career All-American award.
Higa earned her fourth place finish going 1-2 on the second day to finish at 5-2 for the two-day span. In the semifinals, she dropped an 8-2 decision against Leilah Castro of Campbellsville to move into the consolation bracket. She bounced back with an 8-4 victory over Adrienna Turner of Grand View to move onto the third place match. In the third place bout, Higa fell via a 9-0 decision against Alana Vivas of Menlo College. She finishes the year with a 9-2 record, battled through injury, was crowned a CCC Champion at 123 pounds, and secured her second career NAIA All-America honor.
Moore dropped both her matches on day two and finished with a 4-3 overall record. In her first match of day two, she was pinned in 4:35 by Katlyn Pizzo of Campbellsville. In the seventh place match, Moore suffered a pin in 1:10 at the hands of Desinee Lopez of Southern Oregon to finish eighth. She ends the season with a 13-7 overall record, was an All-CCC selection at 130 pounds, and is now an NAIA All-American.
Shines also went 0-2 on the final day of mat action and posted a 3-3 overall record for the weekend. In her first bout, she battled against Maryellen Lafferty of Texas Wesleyan to a 6-6 tie in the match but was pinned in 2:31. In the seventh place bout, Shines dropped an 11-0 tech fall to Josette Partney of Missouri Baptist. She finishes the 2021-22 season with a 25-11 overall record, was the CCC Champion at 143 pounds, and is an NAIA All-American for the first time in her career.
