Former EOU Soccer Player Kiara Fontanilla Makes Debut with Philippines National Team

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Former Eastern Oregon University Women's Soccer player Kiara Fontanilla made her professional debut early Monday morning as she got the starting nod for the Philippines National Team in Pool Play against Australia.

Fontanilla was named the starting goalkeeper for the Philippines in what was their second fixture in pool play of the AFC Women's Asian Cup India 2022. Australia proved to be the victor in the match, taking down the Philippines by a final of 4-0. Fontanilla played the entire contest for the Philippines at Goalkeeper.

"I am super proud of how Kiara played in her first match with the Philippines National Team. Australia is one of the top-15 teams in the world and has one of the best all-time strikers in Sam Kerr," Head Coach Jacob Plocher said. "I was happy to wake up at 2 a.m. local time to watch her national team performance. She is showcasing to collegiate athletes all over the world that it is possible to reach any goal regardless of what level you play at. She represents not only herself and her country with great honor, but it's also great to see her represent Eastern Oregon University."

The Philippines National Team's next match will be Thursday, Jan. 27 at 6 a.m. PT. To read the full recap of the match-up against Australia, click here.
