Owls Sweep Mountaineers in Four-Game Series

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University Baseball wrapped its four-game road conference series at Oregon Tech Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers dropped all four games to the Owls. They now sit at 3-11 overall and 3-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
 
Day 1 – Oregon Tech 12, Eastern Oregon 7 (Game 1) | Oregon Tech 19, Eastern Oregon 10 (Game 2)
How it Happened
• The Mountaineers totaled 15 hits in the first games scoring runs in the second, third and fourth. The Owls (12-14, 7-5 CCC) also had 15 hits in the series opening win, while both teams had one error.
• OIT got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI bunt single to go up 1-0. The Mountaineers took their first lead, 2-1, in the second when Easton Watterson hit a two RBI single up the middle to score Kagen Kennedy and Trevor Curl.
• The Owls answered back in the bottom of the second with three runs to go back up by two. Two singles to the outfield brought in the three runs. EOU cut the Owls lead to one run as Kennedy hit an RBI base hit up the middle to bring in Curl.
• The score remained 4-3 until the fifth when the Mountaineers scored four runs. The bats were swinging in the fifth as three doubles scored three runs. Carsten Manderbach got the scoring started with a double to left that brought home Brooks Dyer.
• Kennedy continued his strong play with a double up the middle to score Manderbach. Elliott Marks had the third double of the frame, this one to left as well, which plated home Kennedy. Leading 6-4, EOU made it a 7-4 game when Adrian Roa singled to score Justin Frederick.
• Eastern was unable to score again in game one, while the Owls tacked on eight over the final four innings to take the series opener 12-7.
• Game two was an even higher scoring affair as the two teams totaled 29 combined runs on 31 hits. The two squads also had a combined 11 errors in the contest.
• The opening frame had 12 runs scored total as EOU trailed 7-5 going into the second. RBI base hits from Trevor Curl and Kagen Kennedy scored runners, while a groundout from newcomer Juan Guardardo scored a run. Curl scored on a wild pitch, while Easton Watterson scored on an error.
• OIT responded with seven runs in the home half of the first to get up by two. The Owls extended the lead to 12-5 in the third. A sacrifice fly and single to left allowed the runners to come in to push the lead to seven for OIT. The Owls added two more runs in the fourth to lead 14-5.
•  Eastern surrendered four more runs to OIT in the fifth before managing to respond on offense. Helping the Owls score the four runs, a two-run homer, an error by EOU, and a sacrifice fly. Four of the Mounties' five runs came in the sixth.
• Road scored the first of the four runs in the sixth on an infield error. Dyer plated home two with a double to bring in Blake Loftus and Watterson. Kennedy then singled to score Dyer. The final run for EOU was on a Watterson sacrifice fly in the seventh to bring in Matthew Bennett.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Kagen Kennedy was 5-9 through the two games and had four RBI to go along with three runs scored.
Brooks Dyer went 5-10 on the day with three runs scored and had two RBI.
• In game one, Jacob Farnsworth fanned four batters in the start and pitched 5.1 innings.
Kolbe Bales struck out four batters in game two to lead EOU.
 
Day 2 – Oregon Tech 7, Eastern Oregon 3 (Game 1) | Oregon Tech 11, Eastern Oregon 2 (Game 2)
How it Happened
• The Owls kept the momentum from day one alive as they totaled 18 runs in the next two games, while their defense held the Mountaineers to just five over the final two outings.
• EOU struck first in the third game of the series scoring two runs in the second to go ahead 2-0. Elliott Marks scored Juan Guardado on a double to make it 1-0. Adrian Roa made it a two-run lead with an infield single to bring in Justin Frederick.
• OIT got a run on the board in the fourth with a solo home run. Eastern responded in the top of the fifth with a run to go back up by two. A Brooks Dyer single up the middle scored Watterson to give EOU 3-1 advantage but they never scored again the rest of the contest.
• OIT grabbed its first lead of the day in the fifth scoring three runs to go up 4-3. A solo home run got the scoring started for OIT. The Owls next two runs came from the help of two Mountaineer errors. A solo home run in the sixth by OIT pushed its lead to two at 5-3.
• The final two runs for the Owls were scored in the seventh and eighth, respectively. A double in the seventh down the left field line made it 6-3. A sacrifice fly in the eighth to right field tacked on the final run to allow OIT to secure the 7-3 win.
• In the finale, EOU managed just two runs and had only four hits over the nine inning span. On the flip side, OIT had five runs in the seventh alone to help secure the nine-run victory.
• A solo home run by the Owls in the second got the game's first run on the board. EOU tied the game up at 1-all in the third when Blake Loftus hit a single to third and scored Roa for an unearned run. OIT responded in the fourth with a single to left center to score two and go up 3-1.
• The Owls extended their lead in the fifth with an RBI single to right that put the score at 4-1. Two solo home runs in the sixth by the Owls gave them a 6-1 advantage before the Mountaineers scored again.
• The final EOU run came in the seventh. The Owls loaded the bases and a walk allowed a runner to come in for EOU. Guardado scored the run to bring the score to 6-2. OIT got the run back in the bottom of the seventh.
• The final five runs for OIT came in the seventh as a pair of two-run home runs by the Owls made the difference. The fifth run came on a wild pitch by EOU that brought the game to its final of 11-2.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Brooks Dyers was 2-5 in game one of day two and had one RBI.
• In the finale, Carsten Manderbach had two hits in four at bats.
Nick Jennings tallied seven strikeouts in game three in seven complete innings pitched.
• In the finale, Yancey had a team best four strikeouts in the start.
 
By the Numbers
12 – Over the two-day span, EOU gave up 12 home runs to the Owls.
49 – The 49 runs scored by OIT is the most EOU has surrendered to an opponent in a four-game series this season.
17 – The Mountaineers drew 17 walks over the four-game series against the Owls.
37 – EOU left 37 total runners stranded over the four games against OIT.
 
Up Next
• EOU will remain on the road as they head to Lewis-Clark State College this upcoming weekend. The four-game series against the Warriors is set for March 27-28 in Lewiston, Idaho.
