Mountaineers Return to the Diamond Spoiled by Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University Baseball team ended its 14-year hiatus Thursday afternoon as they played a non-conference doubleheader against longtime rival College of Idaho. The two teams played a pair of nine inning contests, with the Coyotes winning both by final scores of 13-9 and 5-1.

Game 1 – College of Idaho 13, Eastern Oregon 9
How it Happened
• Game one featured a total of 28 hits, with C of I (5-4) having the edge at 17-11. Despite five errors by the Yotes, the Mountaineers (0-2) still fell by four runs, 13-9.
• The Yotes scored at least one run from the fourth to the seventh inning to help them power to the win. Six runs in the first were key in securing the win.
• The first inning was the highest scoring as the two teams combined for nine runs. EOU tacked on three to start the game and lead 3-0, but six from the home team gave C of I a 6-3 edge after one.
• A throwing error by C of I allowed EOU to score its first run. A one out double by Carsten Manderbach got him in scoring position. He got to third on a fielder's choice before the Yotes' error allowed him to cross home plate.
Elliott Marks then loaded the bases when he got on with a single to left field. Kagen Kenedy was then walked to bring home Easton Watterson, who was also walked. Adrian Roa brought home run No. 3 for Eastern on a sacrifice fly to allow Trevor Curl to score an unearned run.
• Despite jumping out 3-0, the Yotes answered in the bottom half of the first and racked up six runs on four hits and got help on an EOU error. Two walks, two singles and a fielder's choice helped C of I get runners on a score three runs to tie the game.
• The scored remained 6-3 until the top of the fourth frame, when EOU scored a pair of runs to cut the deficit to one-run. Brooks Dyer drew a leadoff walk and eventually made it to third after a throwing error and a wild pitch by C of I. He was brought home on an RBI single from Blake Loftus.
• Loftus was the next man to come home. After his RBI base hit, he got to second another throwing error by the Yotes. Trevor Curl then hit an RBI groundout to allow Loftus to score and cut C of I's lead to one, 6-5.
• The Yotes got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead back to 7-5. It remained 7-5 until the bottom of the fifth as C of I tacked on two more runs to make it a 9-5 game. A 1-2-3 inning to start the sixth got the Yotes offense backout quickly and they capitalized with three more runs in the bottom of the inning.
• The Mountaineers looked to respond but was unable to get the bats going in the sixth or seventh inning as they managed just one hit, which came in the seventh inning. The Yotes final run came in the bottom of the seventh on after a throwing error allowed a runner to score.
• Eastern final four runs came in the top of the ninth as their efforts of a comeback fell short. Two errors from the Yotes helped spark the inning for the Mounties, but it was not enough for a potential come-from-behind win.
• The first run of the inning for EOU, came when Watterson crossed home plate on a throwing error by the pitcher. He got on due to a walk before a ground out, single, and a walk eventually pushed him to third base.
• Following Watterson's score, the Yotes committed another fielding error, which allowed Dyer to cross home plate.
