Mountaineers Swept By Coyotes on the Road

CALDWELL, Idaho – Eastern Oregon University Baseball wrapped up its non-conference road series at College of Idaho Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers battled in both contests but ultimately fell by scores of 6-1 and 12-11.

Game 1 – College of Idaho 6, Eastern Oregon 1
How it Happened
• Both teams hit the ball well, but it was C of I (7-4) who capitalized scoring six runs, while EOU (0-4) had just one. The Yotes had the edge in total hits at 9-7.
• Defense was clean for much of the game as both teams had just one error each. The Mounties allowed just three runs in the first innings, before C of I tacked on three in the eighth to secure the win.
• The Mountaineers lone run came in the opening frame. Brooks Dyer hit a one-out single to center field and two batters later, an RBI double to right center from Trevor Curl got Dyer home.
• C of I responded quickly with two runs scored in the bottom of the first. A two-run home run from Austin Van Horne put the Yotes of 2-1 after one inning of play.
• Eastern was unable to respond the rest of the afternoon as they had multiple hits but never made anything of the opportunities.
• The Yotes lead grew to 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Despite just giving up one hit, the Mountaineers gave up a walk, a hit by pitch, and had a wild pitch that allowed the Yotes to tack on a run
• Defense was the theme for the next five innings of work as they two squads combined for just four hits in that span. The score remained 3-1 in favor of C of I. It was in the eighth inning where the Yotes extended the lead to five runs.
• Five hits fueled the Yotes in their three-run outing. A single, double, and triple in that order helped score the first two runs and make it a 5-1 game. The Mounties then gave up back-to-back singles which allowed the sixth run to score for C of I and bring it to the final score of 6-1.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Easton Watterson led the bats going 3-4 in game one and had three stolen bases, the most in either game.
Brooks Dyer also had a multiple hit game as finished 2-3 with a run scored.
Trevor Curl has the lone RBI and batted 1-4 for the game.
Jaydon Yancey got the start on the bump (0-1) and worked four complete innings with two strikeouts.
Turner Edwards had the most strikeouts with three in a relief effort. He pitched three complete innings.

• Austin Van Horner was 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBI to go along with a home run.
• Jonah Hultberg and Tanner Leaf both hit 2-4, while Hultberg also had a run scored.
• Hunter Kirkpatrick got the win in a predetermined start to improve to 3-1. He pitched one inning and struck out two batters.
• Ben Tighe and Jared Bowman both picked up two strikeouts in one inning of work, respectively.
• Erik Wisenor led the way for the bullpen in strikeouts with three in one inning pitched.

Game 2 – College of Idaho 12, Eastern Oregon 11
How it Happened
• Game two came down to the wire as the Yotes won in walkoff fashion. They trailed by three runs, 11-8, entering the bottom of the ninth. Four runs and a walkoff single sealed the win for the home team, 12-11.
• The Yotes once again won the hitting battle 16-7, but five errors on the day plagued them. Eastern Oregon's defense was stout and did not have an error for the game.
• EOU grabbed the lead first for the second straight game with two runs scored in the first inning to double their efforts from game one. Back-to-back errors by C of I allowed runners to get on and an RBI fielder's choice for Brooks Dyer scored Easton Watterson for the unearned run.
• The second run of the opening frame for Eastern came when Garrett Beckman hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field which allowed Carsten Manderbach to score and make it a 2-0 EOU lead early on.
• Both teams then worked 1-2-3 innings to get to the bottom of the second quickly. The Yotes' bats came to life in the bottom of the second as they scored five runs and racked up six hits to open up the game. Five straight hits to open the inning allowed C of I to take its first lead before EOU managed to get a strikeout.
• The third inning saw both defenses once again dominate with both pitchers going three up, three down against opposing batters. After three innings of work, Eastern trailed 5-2, but the offense found its rhythm in the fourth.
• Two singles in the first three at bats allowed the Mounties to get two runners on in Trevor Curl and Kagen Kennedy. Blake Loftus was walked to load the bases before a wild pitch allowed Curl to score. Two batters later, Payton Hamilton hit a single to shallow left field to plate home Loftus and Kennedy to tie the game at 5-all.
Jacob Farnsworth worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth to keep the gamed knotted at 5-5. The Mountaineers were unable to keep things going in the top of the fifth and C of I once again retook the lead in the bottom half scoring a pair of runs on three hits to go up 7-5.
• The Yotes push the lead back to three runs in the bottom of the sixth after keeping the EOU bats at bay. Following a pitching change by EOU, the Yotes scored a run a pair of hits to extend their lead to 8-5.
• Eastern got a run back in the top of the seventh. Dyer got on base after being hit by a pitch and stole second right away. A fielding error allowed him to get to third and ultimately score a run to cut the Mounties deficit to 8-6.
• A 1-2-3 bottom half of the seventh allowed EOU to get back on offense quickly and the team used it to its advantage. EOU scored four runs in the top of the eighth to go up 10-8. Two walks and a single in the first four at bats allowed the Mounties to get the based loaded with one out.
• Looking to capitalize, Dyer stepped up to the plate and hit a two RBI double to plate home Hamilton and Adrian Roa. The double tied the game at 8-8 before an RBI groundout from Curl and an RBI single from Beckman pushed the score to 10-8 in favor of the Mountaineers.
• The scored remained 10-8 until the ninth inning. EOU tacked on their final run when Dyer hit another RBI single to bring in Watterson for the unearned run. The Yotes managed to get back-to-back outs before hitting Watterson with a pitch and field error allowed him to get to second before Dyer's base hit scored him.
• Leading 11-8, the Mountaineers started the bottom of the ninth with a strikeout but a passed ball allowed the leadoff hitter to get to first. Back-to-back walks then loaded the bases for C of I. Following a pitching change, EOU had a wild pitch get away from Kyle Lund that scored an unearned run to make it 11-9.
• The Yotes next batter followed up the wild pitch by hitting a two RBI triple to right center that tied the game at 11-all. EOU then gave up a single and intentionally walked a batter to load the bases again. They turned a double play for the two outs, but following another walk C of I hit a single to second to score a run and secure the come-from-behind win, 12-11.
