EOU Softball Drops First 2 Games of Simpson Triangular

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

REDMOND, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon softball team fell in its first two games of the season at the Simpson Triangular, 6-0 to Simpson and 8-7 to William Jessup on Sunday.

GAME 1 | (RV) Simpson 6, (RV) Eastern Oregon 0

The Mountaineers were held scoreless in the season opener by a strong pitching performance from the Redhawks' Sydney Moorhead. Moorhead struck out seven and allowed just two EOU hits in the shutout.

The Mounties tallied two hits in the game, the first a double by senior outfielder Rayne Spencer. In her first collegiate at-bat, freshman Haley Ebner singled in the sixth inning after pinch-hitting. Senior Lauren Spencer started the game, pitching three innings while allowing four runs. Junior Jessica Lambert struck out two in three innings, allowing two runs with one earned.

GAME 2 | William Jessup 8, (RV) Eastern Oregon 7

The EOU offense broke out in game two of the day, but a five-run sixth inning for the Warriors led them to victory.

William Jessup began the game with three runs in the first inning on four hits. The Mounties brought home two runs in the second to cut into the deficit with hits by senior Sarah Bonner, junior Jordan Henley and sophomore Madison Parker. Junior Ashley Kelly brought home senior Hannah Rothwell on a fielder's choice, while Henley came home on an error by the Warriors.

The Mountaineers took their first lead in the fifth inning, with three runs on five hits to go ahead 5-3. Seniors Madison Barr, Shevan DeFreitas and Spencer began the inning with three-straight hits, with Barr scoring on Spencer's single. Bonner brought home pinch runner Julie Hernandez with a sacrifice fly and senior Tayler Finch had an RBI single to score Spencer.

The EOU lead was short lived, however, as the Warriors scored five runs the following half inning to go ahead 8-5. The Mounties answered back with two runs in the sixth on Ebner's first career home run, followed by Bonner's second sacrifice fly to score Barr. EOU then had the potential tying run in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to bring them home.

The Mounties tallied 13 total hits in the game, led by three apiece from Spencer and DeFreitas. Junior Ashton Kazmierski pitched five innings, allowing eight runs. Sophomore Amanda Smith pitched two shutout innings, striking out three batters.

EOU finishes the Simpson Triangular on Monday, facing William Jessup at 10 a.m. followed by Simpson at 2 p.m.
