EOU Women’s Wrestling Falls Narrowly to SOU Despite 3 Pins

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In an NAIA Top-15 battle, No. 9 Southern Oregon escaped with a 22-20 win over No. 12 Eastern Oregon on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.

The Raiders barely edged the Mountaineers in front of a great crowd, earning 15 of their 22 points on EOU forfeits. Out of six wrestled matches, the Mounties outscored the Raiders 20-7, winning four of six including three pins.

After a double forfeit, the Mountaineers rolled off three straight pins by seniors Jessica DeHart, Amber Pair and sophomore Macy Higa to take a commanding 15-0 lead. At 130 pounds, freshman Cassidy O'Hara won by a 7-1 decision to extend EOU's lead out to 18-1.

SOU got points back with a close decision at 136 pounds, with freshman Morgan Shines earning a point to make the score 19-4. Back-to-back forfeits for EOU brought Southern back into the dual at 19-14.

In the final wrestled match of the night, junior Dempsi Talkington bumped up a weight class to wrestle at 170. In what would end as the deciding match of the night, Talkington gave everything she had in a very close match, falling 6-4. EOU still led 20-17 after the match, but a final forfeit at 191 pounds gave Southern five more points to win 22-20.

Despite the loss, EOU outwrestled the Raiders with four wins out of six matches and three pins to the Raiders' zero.

The Mounties are next at the Spokane Open on Sunday.
