Block Party: EOU Records 20 Blocks, Bounces Corban in 5 Sets

SALEM, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon volleyball team played their second game of a back-to-back on the road, defeating reigning CCC Champions Corban in five sets behind a 20-block performance, the highest total in program history since 2000.

EOU's 20 blocks were the team's third most in program history with the two highest totals coming in 2000. Junior Allyson Crisp led the way with 13 block assists while fellow junior Taylor Tibbetts had 10 block assists. Freshman Cambree Scott added six assists to the block party as EOU held a 20-6 advantage over Corban for the match.

Additionally, the 40 block assists for the team tied the record for a single match in program history, also set in 2000.

The Mountaineers (12-4, 7-1 CCC) entered Saturday night's matchup as winners of six straight matches, all of which were in conference. No opponent has forced EOU to a fifth set during their winning streak until tonight. The Mountaineers were still able to fend off the Warriors, extending their win streak to seven matches.

The Warriors (9-7, 5-2 CCC) won two straight matches before facing off with Eastern Oregon, and were undefeated at home on the season in four contests. EOU was able to overcome dropping the first set on the road, taking three of the next four to win the match in five sets.

The first set was tightly contested, with each team hitting efficiently. Corban, however, was able to pull away at the end to win the set 25-21.

Both teams continued to battle in the second set. With the score tied at 20, Eastern Oregon went on a 5-0 run to take the set 25-20, tying the match at one set apiece.

Eastern Oregon began to find their groove in the third set, working hard defensively to put points on the board. Three straight blocks by the Mounties gave them a 16-8 lead midway through the stanza, and they would cruise from there to a 25-20 set win.

The fourth set didn't come as easy as the third, and the Mountaineers found themselves trailing the majority of the set. The defense continued to lead the way, with back-to-back blocks tying the set at 19 points each. Ultimately, Corban was able to take the set 25-23.

The Mountaineers were forced into a fifth set, which they hadn't seen since August 31st against Southern Oregon. EOU was able to stay focused and motivated, grinding out a 15-12 win in the fifth set to take the match in Salem.

Megan Bunn once again headed the EOU attack, narrowly missing a 20-20 game. The junior outside hitter accumulated 19 kills and 19 digs, continuing her inspiring play that earned her CCC Player of the Week honors last week. Hailee Ackerman added 16 kills to help the Mounties to secure the road win.

Junior Madison Pilon assisted players 28 times on the night. The setter also tallied 11 digs, giving her a double-double. Sarah Carpenter came in second on the team with 21 assists.

Sophomore Kiley McMurtrey recorded 20 digs in the matchup, while sophomore Aspen Christiansen added 10.

Eastern Oregon will be in Idaho next Thursday in a rivalry matchup at the College of Idaho at 7 p.m. MT. The Coyotes have won six of their last seven matches and are 6-2 in conference this season for another key CCC contest.
