Bunn, Ackerman’s Epic Night Leads EOU to 6th-Straight Win

EUGENE, Ore.- Led by a two-headed attack of juniors Megan Bunn and Hailee Ackerman, the Mountaineer volleyball team pushed past Northwest Christian on the road, increasing their winning streak to six-straight games on Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

The Mountaineers (11-4, 6-1 CCC) tallied 61 kills total with a combined hitting percentage of .225. Despite less dominate second and third sets, EOU completed the win in four sets (25-14, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19)  keeping Northwest Christian to a .097 hitting percentage overall.

Leading the Mountaineer offense was Bunn and Ackerman as the pair finished with a combined 43 kills. Bunn posted 22 kills and three solo blocks while Ackerman had 21 kills. Each hitter set career-highs for kills on the night, while becoming the first EOU duo to reach 20 or more kills in a match in the past decade.

The feat was last accomplished exactly 11 years ago on Sep. 21, 2007 when former Mountaineers Chelsea Lally and Grace DeBoodt each had 20 kills in another four set victory over NCU. The match was also played on the road in Eugene.

In addition to the outside powerhouse, Cambree Scott, a freshman middle hitter from Bend, Oregon, tallied seven kills and four solo blocks.

On defense, EOU had a combined 83 digs to NCU's close 76. Sophomore libero Kiley McMurtrey had a total of 25 digs throughout the four sets, giving the Mountaineers consistency and reassurance in the back row. Sophomore setter Madison Pilon also added 15 digs.

EOU started off the first set neck and neck with the Beacons, but pulled away after the first five points leaving Northwest Christian with only 10 points to EOU's 18. With an attack error by the Beacon's, the Mountaineer's won the first set handily 25-14.

Once the second set started, both teams were competing for every point. The CCC rivals battled back and forth for almost ten points until the Beacon's capitalized off of a service error and attack error by the Mountaineers to bring the score to 16-12 in favor of the Beacons. EOU then fought back with several kills of their own to bring the score back even 21-21. After two straight NCU kills and two attack errors by EOU, the Beacon's came out on top 25-23.

Much like the first two sets, both teams fought early on in set number three. With NCU leading 16-13, Ackerman came up with a crucial kill between two NCU errors, tying the score 16-16. With two kills by Bunn and Ackerman along with a kill by freshman right side hitter Kaci Cox, EOU jumped in front 19-18. The Beacon's then called a timeout, but it wasn't enough as the Mountaineer's took the set all the way to the house, 25-23.

The fourth and final set mirrored the first set's pattern with the score close early before the Mountaineer's pulled away. Leading 19-17, EOU ended the set and match by giving the Beacons only two additional points to end it 25-19.

Senior setter Sarah Carpenter and sophomore setter Madison Pilon both reached the 20-assist threshold on the night. Pilon led the way with 25 assists, while Carpenter posted 20.

On the Beacons' side, Kacey Campbell had 14 kills and Megan Van Marter had eight kills and four blocks. Kayla Olson led the team with 21 digs while McKenna Northern had a double-double with 15 digs and 19 assists.

Eastern Oregon continues its road trip on Saturday, visiting reigning CCC Champions Corban for the first time in 2018 at 7:30 p.m. in Salem, Oregon.
