Eastern Oregon Bounces Back with Sweep of OIT

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 15 Eastern Oregon volleyball team swept Oregon Tech at Quinn Coliseum on Saturday night to earn their first Cascade Collegiate Conference victory of 2018.

After falling in a tight five set match the night prior, the Mountaineers (6-4, 1-1 CCC) took away all the drama with a sweep (25-16, 25-18, 27-15) of the Owls (5-4, 0-2 CCC). EOU used a large advantage in hitting percentage (.209- .075) to dominate on Saturday.

The Blue and Gold came out hard in the first set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead early on. Oregon Tech answered with an 8-3 run of their own, however, the Mountie attack proved too powerful, finishing with 15 kills (.325 kill %) to take the set 25-16.

In the second set, EOU found themselves trailing 12-15 at midway point. However, a huge block shifted the momentum, which started an 8-0 run to push the score to 20-15. The Mounties kept up the momentum for the rest of the stanza, taking it 25-18. EOU won 13 of the last 16 points of the set.

The third set was more evenly matched, as OIT pushed EOU to 27-25 in the final moments of the game. The attack had 21 kills and 50 total attacks in the final set.

The attack was dominant throughout the night finishing with a combined 44 kills. Juniors Hailee Ackerman and Megan Bunn finished the night with double-digit kills. Ackerman led the team with 13, Bunn contributed 10 and redshirt junior Taylor Tibbetts had six. Senior Sarah Carpenter and sophomore Madison Pilon each had an impressive night, contributing to the EOU attack with 17 and 16 assists, respectively.

The defense came up big with four blocks and 86 digs in the three sets. Three players finished the game with double-digit digs, sophomore Aspen Christiansen and Bunn led both teams with 23 and 22 digs respectively and sophomore Kiley McMurtrey added 14.

The Owls were led on offense by Chase BOhman, who had 19 of the team's 30 kills, while also attacking 65 times in the match. She added 14 digs for the double-double.

The EOU volleyball team travels to Portland next weekend to play Multnomah and Warner Pacific on Sept. 7 and 8.
