Mountaineer Volleyball Sweeps C of I, Advances to Conference Finals

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon volleyball team swept the No. 3-seed College of Idaho Coyotes in the semifinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank on Friday evening at the Lithia Motors Pavillion.

The No. 2-seeded and 12th-ranked Mountaineers enjoyed a bye in the first round of the tournament, and were able to take care of the No. 16 Coyotes in three sets (25-23, 25-17, 26-24) to punch their ticket to the conference championship. The win over C of I comes as a revenge game for the Mountaineers, who were knocked out by the Yotes in the conference semifinals a year ago .

The last game of the regular season for the Mounties also featured College of Idaho back on Nov. 2, when the Yotes defeated Eastern Oregon in five sets. Much like tonight, the Blue and Gold went up 2-0 in that contest, but C of I fought the whole way and ended up taking the match. When the Mounties found themselves in the same situation tonight, they kept their foot on the gas pedal and finished off the Yotes in straight sets.

The offense was provided by all-conference selections juniors Megan Bunn and Hailee Ackerman, who finished the contest with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Juniors Taylor Tibbetts and Allyson Crisp also got involved on offense, tallying five kills apiece.

Sophomore Madison Pilon was the main setter on the evening, finding her teammates for 24 total assists. Senior Sarah Carpenter was also active as usual, accumulating nine of her own.

The highest ranked block defense in the Cascade Collegiate Conference lived up to the hype in the contest, and ended the three-set match with 13 blocks. Two of the conference's best blockers in Crisp and freshman Cambree Scott highlighted the defensive effort, with Crisp getting seven and Scott accruing six.

Co-Libero of the Year and All-CCC Honorable Mention selection Kiley McMurtrey led the Mountaineers in digs, recording 17 of them. Also lively on the back line was sophomore Aspen Christiansen who totalled 11 digs, and Bunn who added 10.

With the win, Eastern Oregon has earned a matchup with either top-seeded Southern Oregon or No. 4-seeded Corban for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship. Corban defeated SOU in straight sets back on Nov. 2, and split the season series with the Raiders. The title match is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday evening in Ashland, Oregon as the Blue and Gold look for their second tournament championship in program history.
