No. 12 Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to SOU in CCC Championship

ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 12 Eastern Oregon volleyball team lost in four sets to No. 10 Southern Oregon in the finals of the Cascade Collegiate Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, Saturday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Southern Oregon (26-3) showed that they deserved to be the top-seed in the CCC tournament with a compelling victory over Eastern Oregon (25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20) to win the tourney title. Southern and Eastern were co-champions for the CCC coming into the season, both going 17-3 in conference action. However, SOU won both matchups during the regular season to earn home court advantage.

The Mountaineers (23-7) played each set tough, and didn't make anything easy on the Raiders. Each set was decided by an average of 3.5 points, exemplifying how tightly contested the match was. However, Southern made big plays when it mattered most, and were able to win 3-1.

Three players tallied double-digit kills for the Blue and Gold, including juniors Megan Bunn (15), Hailee Ackerman (13), and Taylor Tibbetts (10). The hitters were set up once again by sophomore Madison Pilon and senior Sarah Carpenter, who each eclipsed 20 assists. Pilon finished with 23, and Carpenter ended with 21.

Defensively, sophomore Kiley McMurtrey centered the defensive unit, accumulating 19 digs in the process. Also active on the back line was Bunn who recorded 15 digs, and sophomore Aspen Christiansen who tallied 12. The Mountaineers also rose for 13 blocks in the contest, five more than SOU managed. Leading the charge at the net was junior Allyson Crisp, freshman Cambree Scott, and Tibbetts who each reached five block assists.

Showing what an even match it was, SOU hit .225 from the floor while EOU hit .210. Neither team hit particularly well in the third and fourth sets, but SOU was able to come up with just a few more kills.

CCC Player of the Year Taylor Ristvedt had 16 kills and hit .382 to lead the Raiders, including the match-winning kill.

Despite the loss, Eastern Oregon earned the conference's second automatic qualifier to nationals by virtue of playing SOU in the finals. The Mounties will find out who they play next after the NAIA Selection Show, which will premier on Monday morning at 8 a.m. Pacific time. EOU will host a watch party at that time in the booster room of Quinn Coliseum, in which all are invited to attend.

The NAIA Championships begin Nov. 17 for the opening round at host sites. If the Mounties receive a first-round bye, they will move onto the final site in Sioux City, Iowa, beginning Monday, November 26.
