EOU Draws With Northwest 1-1 After Double Overtime

KIRKLAND, Wash.- (RV) Eastern Oregon women's soccer tied 1-1 on the road against Northwest University, Friday afternoon in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The opening 10 minutes was exciting soccer from both teams. The Eagles (5-6-1, 4-1-1 CCC) struck first, when they won a corner off of a Sarah Mitchell slide tackle. Jaclyn Metz found Sharaya Roberts head at the back post to take a 1-0 lead. This is the third goal this season the (RV) Mountaineers (8-1-2, 4-1-2 CCC) have conceded on a corner kick.

The Mountaineers did not let them enjoy the lead for long, taking only seconds to level the game 1-1. The goal came through midfielder Natalie Mitchell as the senior beat the keeper from 25 yards out, finding the top left corner. The next 35 minutes of play were much quieter. Northwest maintained the majority of possession for the rest of the half, but the score remained 1-1.

Both teams battled hard in the second half, but neither side could find the winner forcing the game into overtime. In a critical moment, senior Taylor Boyer made a goal-line clearance to keep the score tied before the end of regulation.

However, the Eagles came out flying in overtime. Northwest was down the Mountaineers throats early, narrowly missing as a great chance ricocheted off the crossbar. After 20 minutes of additional play, neither sides could find the game winner as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Northwest outshot Eastern Oregon 10-1 in the overtime periods.

Senior Katie Machkiosky led both teams in shots with eight followed by Rylee Rassier and Eastern's Taylor Boyer with seven. Northwest finished the game with 15 corners to EOU's four.

Junior goal keeper Cydni Cottrell had to come up with 10 big saves in the match to keep it tied. On the other side, Northwest keeper Kat Sanhez made 11 saves.

The Mountaineers will continue their road trip and take on Evergreen State in Olympia on Sunday at 1 p.m. EOU won't play again at Community Stadium until Homecoming weekend, facing off with Corban and Northwest Christian in La Grande on Oct. 19 and 21.
