No. 13 EOU Volleyball Pushes Past Eagles in Close Sweep

KIRKLAND, Wash. - The No. 13 Mountaineer volleyball team came up victorious Friday night as they swept Northwest on the road for their third-straight win in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The three set win (27-25, 25-23, 25-23) is the second win over Northwest this season.  With this sweep EOU, now has a record of 13-2 in conference and 18-5 overall. With their only two losses coming from Southern Oregon, the Mountaineers are tied for first place in the CCC, with the Raiders owning the tie breaker.

On the night, the junior class led the offense with Megan Bunn (12 kills), Taylor Tibbetts (12 kills), and Hailee Ackerman (11 kills). Their efforts added to EOU's combined 43 kills compared to NU's 38. In the assist department, sophomore setter Madison Pilon and senior setter Sarah Carpenter had a combined 25 assists with 15 coming from Pilon and 10 coming from Carpenter. On defense, sophomore libero Kiley McMurtrey had 22 digs while Bunn had a stupendous night on defense as well with 21 digs.

In the first set, both teams came to play and were not going down without a fight. Starting off with two kills by Bunn, the score was 2-2 with NU having two of their own kills. NU then took the lead at 7-8 with a kill, but that would only be one of two times during the match that NU would lead over the Mountaineers.  After battling back to make it 11-8, the score would be tight throughout the rest of the set with it tying again at 19-19. After two kills by Ackerman and Tibbetts, the score was 22-19 and EOU had a chance to take it, but NU made their way back into contention. The score tied again at 22-22 in a back-and-forth set, then tied again three more times at 23-23, 24-24, and 25-25. EOU eventually comes out victorious at 27-25.

The second set was just as tough as the first as the Mountaineers and Eagles were always within three points of each other throughout the entire match. At 10-15 Northwest, the Blue and Gold started to kick it into gear with a kill from Mullins before three back-to-back attack errors by the Eagles. Now with the momentum, the Mountaineers tied it up at 19-19 and then again at 22-22 until eventually taking a second set off of NU in their house with a final score of 25-23.

The third and final set was similar to the first two in that both teams were back and forth point after point to get ahead of the other team. It wasn't until 20-15 that EOU took a solid lead ahead of the Eagles. Northwest responded with a seven-point run to tie the score up at 21-21 and then again at 23-23. Knowing this would be a fight, the Mountaineer's got two kills to end the third set by a score of 25-23 once again, earning the sweep.

For Northwest, Sarah Warner had a team high of 10 kills while three other Eagles, Kenann White, Hannah Lord, and Audrey Saelens had six kills. Setter Courtney Carr had 20 assists and Cristina Hegarty had 22 digs.
