EOU Softball Finishes Montana Road Trip with Carroll Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HELENA, Mont. – Despite splitting the day, the EOU softball team took its fourth-consecutive series with a 6-0 win over Carroll in game one, as junior pitcher Hailey Kline chalked up 10 strikeouts and only two hits.

In game two, the Saints offense found some momentum, carding runs in four of their six innings, as Carroll rolled past EOU, 7-2.

The Blue and Gold now sit at 17-10 and 11-4 in the CCC, earning  a share of third place, in a tie with Oregon Tech.

GAME ONE – EOU 6, CARROLL 0
On the mound, Kline set a new season-high with 10 strikeouts pitching the complete seven innings. The Pendleton, Ore. native only gave up a pair of hits and one base on balls.

The EOU offense got things going early, as junior third basemen Chelsea Spanier drilled a single to center to score senior leftfielder Taylor Gerlach in the first.

In the third, senior designated player Lauren Burchak homered to left for two RBIs, scoring senior first basemen Cheyenne Barker who reached first as the previous batter. Continuing to wield her hot bat, Spanier hit a back-to-back home run, adding to the EOU lead (4-0).

After hitting a one-out, single in the top of the fourth, T. Gerlach was brought across the plate by a Barker single to left field, increasing the Mountie lead by one, 5-0.

EOU would add one more run in the top half of the seventh when Barker went yard to left-center, finishing the day a perfect 4-for-4. Carroll (10-9, 7-5 CCC), looked to put up a fight in the bottom of the seventh but EOU forced a three-up, three-down inning.

GAME TWO – CARROLL 7, EOU 2
The Saints found success at the plate in the first inning of game two, notching a quick set of runs for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Carroll scored two more (4-0), thanks to a single from Megan McCormick and a sac. groundout from Anna Aproberts.

With one out in the third, T. Gerlach got things going with a double to left center. As the next batter, junior shortstop Lena Richards hit for a single toward third base. Carroll then decided to walk Barker to load the bases, but Burchak singled to score two, 4-2.

The two-run deficit was as close as EOU could get, as the Saints scored two more in the bottom of the third, and one more insurance run in the sixth for a 7-2 win.

Senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem got the start, pitching the whole game, while earning a trio of strikeouts and 13 groundouts.
