Barker’s Walk-Off Homer Helps EOU Softball Capture First Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. – Junior right-fielder Cheyenne Barker belted a three-run walk-off homer, and the Eastern Oregon University softball team took down Simon Fraser, 10-8, for its first win of the 2016 campaign. The Mountaineers split their two games on Sunday afternoon at the Northwest Cup after falling to Saint Martin's, 8-3.

GAME ONE
EOU 10, Simon Fraser 8 (Nine Innings)
EOU reaped a little redemption after defeating Simon Fraser by two runs in a nine-inning thriller to open the day.

Although Barker was the hero with her walk-off bomb, sophomore second baseman Maryssa Santi, senior first baseman Marisa Gonzalez, and junior third baseman Alex Shuster also homered for the Mountaineers. The team's effort tied for the second-highest home run tally in program history.

In the circle, sophomore righty Hailey Kline tossed seven innings and collected a career-high eight strikeouts, while junior pitcher Alexis Spence recorded two innings for EOU.

Looking dead in the water with a six-run deficit, EOU exploded for six runs and five hits in the bottom of the third inning to even the contest. Santi smashed a leadoff homer to centerfield, and Gonzalez later followed with a three-run homer down the right-field line to cut the deficit to two (6-4).

Following a 26-minute rain delay, Shuster homered to left field to plate junior pinch runner Jorden Gerlach and tie the game at six apiece.

After the game saw just three hits between the two squads in the next five innings, the Clan tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth to snag an 8-6 advantage.

With their backs against the wall, the Mountaineers fought back with a quartet of runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal the victory. Santi crossed home plate on a passed ball, and with two runners on, Barker sent the winning homer to right-center field to dial in the 10-8 triumph.

GAME TWO
Saint Martin's 8, EOU 3
The second contest saw Saint Martin's plate six runs in the fourth inning to break away, and EOU never recovered from the deficit.

Barker continued her solid day at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, including a solo home run in the fourth frame. Meanwhile, Santi batted 1-for-3 and launched a two-run single in the seventh stanza.

Junior pitcher Haylie VanLaethem got tacked with the loss, while sophomore righty Ashley Driscoll saw 2.1 innings in the circle.

The Mountaineers claimed an early 1-0 lead in the fourth thanks to the one-out homer by Barker.

However, the Saints responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame, including seven hits, to take a commanding five-run lead.

Trailing 8-1 in the seventh, Barker mustered a leadoff single, and then junior designated player Lauren Burchak followed with a double to keep EOU in it. With two outs, Santi singled to left-center field to plate two more runs, but the Saints managed to record the final out of the game and halt the Mountaineers' comeback.

UP NEXT
EOU (1-7) returns to action on Friday for a doubleheader against Northwest Nazarene. First pitch in Nampa, Idaho, is set for 2 p.m. MT.
