Mountaineers Defeat Concordia, 3-2

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University softball held off a late rally by Concordia University Cavaliers Monday morning as the Mountaineers came away with a 3-2 victory. The game was the second game of a doubleheader that got rained out on Saturday.
 
Concordia looked as like they were going to break onto the scoreboard in the second inning. Kate Santos doubled to right center to put a runner on base. She advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mariah Jimenez followed with a walk and the Cavaliers had runners on the corners with one out. Lindsey Walchli got out of the inning as she got McKenzie Marshall to ground out and Lucy Baldovino to strike out to end the inning.
 
Eastern Oregon broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. Stephanie Maestretti singled to left to start the inning for EOU.  With a 2-2 count, Cassie Wendt hit a two run home run to left center putting EOU on top, 2-0. Brittnee Carman-Rice followed with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. However, she was left stranded at second base as the next three Mountaineers struck out to end the inning.
 
The Mountaineers looked to extending its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wendt and Carman-Rice recorded back to back singles and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Gracie Flyg. After a fly out to right the Mountaineers still had the runners on second and third base. The threat ended when Wendt was picked off third base.
 
The Cavaliers broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. Meghan Luebbert walked to get the rally going for Concordia. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a ground out to second base. With two outs and a runner on second, Cassidy Horner singled to left to score a run, cutting the Mountaineers lead down to one, 2-1.
 
Eastern Oregon added to its lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning. With a runner on second base, Katie Martell singled to left field, which scored Andrea Roeder from second base to put the Mountaineers on top, 3-1.
 
Concordia did not go away quietly as they started a seventh inning rally. Katie Aden walked to start the Cavaliers inning off. Horner followed with a single to left field putting two runners on base for Concordia with no outs. Both runners advanced a base when Walchli threw a wild pitch. The next batter for Concordia, Walachli recorded a ground out and the runners stayed on second and third. However, Santos singled to shortstop, which scored Aden and trimmed EOU's lead to one, 3-2. That would be all Concordia would get as Walchli struck out the next two batters to retired the side and Eastern Oregon came away with a 3-2 win.
 
Cassie Wendt led the Mountaineers with two hits and two RBIs on the game. Kate Santos led Concordia with three hits. Lindsey Walchli picked up the win for EOU going seven innings and striking out four.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, April 11 when they host Oregon Tech. First pitch for EOU is set for 2 p.m.  Concordia returns to action on April, 11 when they host Corban, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
