Box Score 2 LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team swept the Northwest Christian University Beacons in a Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field. The Mountaineers defeated Northwest Christian, 4-3, in game one and 10-2, in five innings, in game two.
Game One – The first game started out in a pitcher's duel as
Lindsey Walchli and Katie Walker only allowed one combined hit for the first two innings of action. In the top of the third inning the Beacons broke onto the scoreboard with an RBI single by Randi Kostner.
Walker continued to keep the Mountaineers guessing as EOU went the first three innings only collecting one hit. Northwest Christian added it its lead in the top of the fourth inning. Chelsea Hannon grounded out to shortstop and on the play Jazzmine Villaruel scored to put the Beacons on top 2-0.
The Mountaineers mounted its comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Mountaineers loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. However, the next two EOU batters put grounded into fielder's choices, which saw the runner get forced out at home on both plays. The bases remained loaded and
Gracie Flyg came through with a two run RBI single to right field to tie the game at 2-2.
Georgianna Kelly followed with her own two run RBI single putting EOU on top 4-2 after four innings of play.
Northwest Christian looked as if they would mount a comeback of their own in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Gabby Stover grounded out to the pitcher but one run came across to score and EOU held a one run lead, 4-3. The Beacons had the tying run at third base but Walchli struck out the next batter to end the inning.
The Beacons looked to be threatening again in the top of the sixth inning as they had runners on second and third with two outs. However, the threat ended when Walchli got Laynee Bevans to ground out to shortstop.
In the top of the seventh inning, Walchli looked to be in control as she recorded the first two outs of the inning on four pitches. However, the Beacons got a runner on base when Stover tripled down the right field line. Stover was stranded on third base as Parker Bonife struck out to end the game and EOU came away with a 4-3 win.
Walchli pitched all seven innings for EOU and picked up her seventh win of the season. She struck out ten in the contest. Katie Walker picked up the loss for the Beacons.
Game Two – Northwest Christian jumped on Walchli early in game two. With a runner on second base Kostner singled to second base, which advanced Bevans to third. However, a throwing error by EOU allowed Bevans to score to put Northwest Christian on top, 1-0.
The Mountaineers battled back in the bottom of the first.
Mariebeth Watanabe doubled to right center to get the Mountaineers offense going. She was advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by
JoElla Smith.
Katie Martell followed with a single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1 after the first inning.
The Beacons answered right back in the top of the second inning, with runners on first and second base, Bevans singled to right field, which scored Addy Hoskins to put the Beacons ahead, 2-1. However, the Beacons offense went cold the rest of the game as Walchli only allowed one hit for the remainder of the game.
After the Beacons took the lead, the Mountaineers jumped all over the Breanna Johnson in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on second and third, Wendt scored on a pass ball to tie the game at 2-2.
Andrea Roeder put the Mountaineers on top as she hit a sacrifice fly to left field putting EOU on top 3-2.
The offense continued to roll for Eastern Oregon in the bottom of the second inning. With two runners on base, Martell doubled to right center, which scored J. Smith and Watanabe extending the Mountaineers lead to 5-2. The next batter up for EOU was
Stephanie Maestretti and she crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a two run home run to extend the Mountaineers lead to 7-2.
Eastern Oregon extended its lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maestretti singled up the middle which advanced the runners, J. Smith and Martell, to second and third. However, J. Smith scored on a throwing error by the Beacons center fielder extending EOU's lead to 8-2.
Brittnee Carman-Rice made it 9-2 when she reached on a fielder's choice which scored Martell from third base. EOU added more runs on the board when Flyg singled to center field putting EOU ahead by eight runs, 10-2.
The Beacons could not get any offense going in the top of the fifth inning. After a leadoff single by Hannon the Beacons next three hitters were retied by Walchli ending the game as EOU took game two, 10-2 in five innings.
Katie Martell led all hitters with three hits in game two for EOU. Maestretti and Flyg followed with two hits apiece. Bevans and Hannon led the way for the Beacons collecting two hits apiece.
Eastern Oregon returns to action tomorrow when they host Corban University at 1 p.m. PT at Peggy Anderson Field. Northwest Christian travels to Caldwell, Idaho to face College of Idaho tomorrow at 12 p.m. MT.
