Owls Soar By Mountaineers

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team trailed early in both contest and could not come all the way back and were swept by Oregon Tech on Saturday afternoon. EOU lost game one, 8-4, and fell in game two, 5-1.

Game One – Eastern Oregon looked as if they were going to break the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Cassie Wendt singled to right field and then proceeded to steal second base. Gracie Flyg followed with a single to right field and Wendt tried to score from second but was thrown out at the plate.

The Owls broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. After Lindsey Walchli issued a leadoff walk to Tasha Silvius, Cassidy Olson helped herself out by hitting a two run home run to right field putting Oregon Tech ahead 2-0. With a runner on at third base, McKenzie Shrum drove in the third run of the inning for Oregon Tech and after two complete innings Oregon Tech led 3-0 over EOU.

Oregon Tech added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a Walchli wild pitch put runners on second and third, Tori Weatherford singled down the left field line to score two, extending the Owls lead to 5-0. Oregon Tech added one more in the inning and after four complete innings the Owls led 6-0.

Eastern Oregon broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. Nicole Redd walked to load the bases for Mariebeth Watanabe with two outs in the inning. Watanabe drew a bases loaded walk to that scored Wendt from third base. It was EOU's only run of the inning.

The Mountaineers continued to battle and in the top of the sixth inning EOU tacked on three more runs. After a Katie Martell walk and a Stephanie Maestretti single put two runners on base for EOU, Brittnee Carman-Rice came up to the plate. Carman-Rice cleared the bases as she hit a three run home run to right center putting EOU down two, 6-4. That would be as close as the Mountaineers would get as Oregon Tech added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and took game one, 8-4.

Game Two – Like game one, Oregon Tech scored the first run of the game. In the bottom of the first inning, Shauna Collins led off with a single and advanced to third on a Weatherford double. With two runners on, Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Collins putting Oregon Tech on top, 1-0.

The Owls kept the runs coming and as they added three more unanswered runs. After three complete innings EOU trailed Oregon Tech, 4-0.

Eastern Oregon broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. After a Mountaineer reached base, Carman-Rice laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Georgianna Kelly to second base. Kelly advanced to third base on a wild pitch and EOU had a runner on third with one out. Wendt followed with a walk and proceeded to steal second base but Kelly was caught trying to steal home plate. With two outs and a runner on second base, Gracie Flyg singled up the middle, which scored Wendt putting EOU down, 4-1.

Oregon Tech added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a four run lead, 5-1, going to the top of the seventh inning. Eastern Oregon could not get anything going and only had one player reach base and EOU fell to Oregon Tech, 5-1.

EOU returns to action on Monday, March 24 when they open up its home scheduled against Lewis & Clark College. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
