Box Score 2 PORTLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team was swept by the Concordia Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers fell in game one, 9-1, in six innings and dropped game two, 11-0, in five innings.
Game One – The Cavaliers looked as if they were going to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first inning. Concordia loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning but
Lindsey Walchli induced Taylor Bussey to pop up to second base to end the inning.
Concordia's pitcher McKenzie Marshall kept the Mountaineers (4-4, 1-3 CCC) bats quiet during the first three innings of the contest. Marshall had a perfect game against EOU through three innings. In the bottom of the third the Cavaliers added some offensive momentum as they had two runners on base with one out. However, Walchli got a fielder's choice and a line out on the next two batters to end the threat.
EOU broke the scoreless tie and Marshall's perfect game in the top of the fourth inning.
Mariebeth Watanabe doubled down the left field line to start. Stephanie Masestretti drover her home with an RBI single up the middle putting EOU on top 1-0.
However, EOU's lead disappeared quickly in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a runner on second base, Meghan Luebbert singled through the right side and Mariah Jimenez scored on EOUs throwing error. The Cavaliers continued to tack on to its lead and added three more in the inning and came away with a 4-1 lead after four innings.
Concordia continued to add to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Cavaliers scored three more runs taking a 7-1 lead.
EOU looked to get a rally started in the bottom of the sixth inning as they got two runners base. However, the threat was ended on an EOU strikeout. The Cavaliers put up two more in the bottom of the sixth to run rule EOU in game one, 9-1, in six innings.
Game Two – Concordia's Lucy Baldovino kept the Mountaineers off balance in game two and the Cavaliers offense was clicking in full gear to start game two. Baldovino held the Mountaineers to only three hits in the game which Concordia won 11-0 in five innings.
EOU got its first hit in the game in the top of the second inning.
Katie Martell singled up the middle but was stranded on base.
The Cavaliers offense was clicking from the start of the contest as Cassidy Horner doubled down the right field line to plate two Cavaliers in the first inning. Concordia's offense continued to roll as a two run home run by Jimenez and a solo home run by Luebbert put the Cavaliers on top 5-0 after two innings.
After the Mountaineers went down in order in the top of the third inning, Concordia's offense continued to click. Bussey hit the third home run of the game for the Cavaliers with a two run shot to put the Cavaliers on top 7-0. Concordia was not done in the bottom of the third inning as they scored two more runs to take a 9-0 lead after three innings.
JoElla Smith led off of the fourth inning for EOU with a single to shortstop. However, the next three batters were retired for EOU and Smith was left standing on first base.
The home runs kept coming for Concordia as the fourth home run of the game was hit in the bottom of the fourth inning as Taylor Copher hit a two run shot to put the Cavaliers on top 11-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Mountaineers got their third hit of the ball game when
Katie Martell doubled to right center. However, Eastern Oregon could not get her around to score as the Mountaineers next three hitters were retired in order.
EOU dropped game two, 11-0 in five innings.
Eastern Oregon returns to action next Friday, March 21 when they travel to Ashland, Ore. to face Southern Oregon University. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
