Eagles Edge Mountaineers, 59-58

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Trevor Phillips jumper fell short as the clock expired and the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers were defeated by Northwest University, 59-58, on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.

Michael Greene led the way for the Eagles as he scored a game high 25 points. Teammate Michael Russo followed with 15 points on the night. Tony Eackles Jr. and Kyllian Wood led the Mountaineers with 18 points and 14 points, respectively.

Eastern Oregon and Northwest were locked in a tight battle and a jumper by Eackles put EOU on top, 5-4, with 17 minutes left In the first half. EOU continued to hold the lead in the first half and with 10:21 left, Phillips hit a jumper to put the Mountaineers ahead by four, 14-10.

Northwest answered right back and after a Greene three pointer, the Eagles took a two point lead, 16-14. However, the lead did not last long for Northwest, as the Mountaineers scored the next seven points to take a five point lead, 21-16.

The Eagles trimmed the lead down to three points, 23-20, with six minutes to go before halftime but EOU had an answer. EOU held Northwest scoreless for three minutes and Eastern Oregon scored seven straight points to take a ten point lead, 30-20.

The Mountaineers held a ten point lead, 34-24, to go into halftime after Deonta Edwards hit a jumper.

The Eagles came soaring back early in the second half as Northwest started the first four minutes of the half on a 13-2 run to take a one point lead, 37-36. EOU's offense looked as if it was coming back to life after jumpers by Brady Barrett and Wood which put EOU ahead by three points, 40-37.

Eastern Oregon continued to extend its lead to four points but the Eagles answered right back. With EOU ahead by four, 44-40, the Eagles scored the next five points, capped by a Ryan McIntosh three pointer to give Northwest a one point lead, 45-44.

With 5:13 left in the game Kevin Attila hit a three pointer putting EOU ahead by four points, 51-47. However, the Eagles answered again as they scored the next six points, and held EOU scoreless for a two and a half minute stretch to take a two point lead, 53-51.

Tony Eackles gave the Mountaineers the lead back with 2:29 left in the contest as he hit a three pointer. The lead lasted 25 seconds as Greene answered on the other end of the court putting the Eagles back on top by a point.

Fifteen second later EOU took the lead again after Phillips hit a jumper in the lane to put EOU ahead by one point, 58-57. However, that would be the last bucket for EOU and Russo hit a jumper with 46 seconds left to take an 59-58 lead. EOU had one last chance to take the lead but Phillips' shot fell short and Northwest came away with an 59-58 victory.

The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow night when they host The Evergreen State College Geoducks at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Caldwell, Idaho to face College of Idaho at 7:30 p.m. MT.
