Volleyball Weekly Notes: CCC Tournament

CCC Tournament
EOU welcomes you to the 2014 Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank. This weekend's volleyball championship is hosted by No. 11 ranked Eastern Oregon University and includes the top 4 teams in the CCC, # 4 seed College of Idaho, # 3 Seed Concordia, 2 seed and regular season co-champions Southern Oregon and the 1 seed and regular season co- champions Eastern Oregon.
 
Last Week
Last week the Mountaineers went 2-0 with victories over Northwest Christian and Corban. On Friday, EOU swept Northwest Christian University, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 on Friday night. Amanda Miller led the Mountaineers with 11 kills on the evening. Kasaundra Tuma and Emily Nay followed with nine kills, apiece. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 33 assists and Jessalyn Smith recorded a game-high 22 digs. The winning continued on Saturday as EOU wrapped up their 2014 regular season by sweeping Corban University, 26-24, 25-20, 25-16, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Mountaineers clinched a share of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Regular Season Title. Amanda Miller led the way for the Mountaineers as she recorded a match-high 15 kills. Kasaundra Tuma followed with 11 and Katina Ferguson rounded out the Mountaineers with double-digit kills with 10. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 41 assists and Jessalyn Smith recorded 19 digs.
 
Co-Regular Season Champion
For the first time in school history, the Eastern Oregon University claimed a share of the 2014 regular season conference title. EOU finished the year at 16-2, tied with Southern Oregon University for first place.
 
Red Lion Player of the Week
Jessalyn Smith was named CCC Red Lion Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the CCC office announced Monday. Smith led the Mountaineers to a 2-0 week and the first ever Conference Championship for the Mountaineers. Smith led the Mountaineers in digs in both games last weekend. Smith leads the CCC in digs per set (5.57).
 
About the Opponents
College of Idaho

The Yotes of College of Idaho come into the conference tournament with a 17-11 overall record. The Yotes finished fourth in the CCC this season. College of Idaho is averaging 13.6 killers per set and 12.8 assists per set. Emily Ottinger leads the Yotes in kills on the season with 361. Sierra Porter is first with assists on the season with 1,123. The Yotes advanced to the semifinals by sweeping Northwest University on Tuesday.
Concordia
The Cavaliers have Concordia University 18-8 overall record and 14-4 for a third place finish in the conference. Lindsey Dorsey leads the Cavaliers in kills on the season with 302. Jenessa Taylor leads the team with 966 assists while Shantel Gritsch leads the team with 480 digs on the season. Concordia advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 27-29, 25-20) over Oregon Tech on Tuesday night.
Southern Oregon
Southern Oregon advanced to the semifinals after finishing tied for the CCC regular season title with EOU. The Raiders are 22-4 on the season and are led by Motade Atanda who has recorded 381 kills on the season. Lauren McGowne leads the team in assists with 987 on the season. Southern Oregon is averaging 13.3 kills per set and are collecting 15.7 digs per set. The Raiders have won their last two contests and are ranked No. 13 in the latest Coaches' Top 25.
 
Nationals
Winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National Women's Volleyball Championships which begin next Saturday November 22nd with opening rounds.
