Soccer Defeats Great Falls, 3-2

Box Score

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's soccer team claimed its second victory of the 2013 season with a, 3-2, overtime victory over the University of Great Falls on Monday afternoon.

Erika Whitehurst scored the game-winning-goal for the Mountaineers less than four minutes into the overtime period.

"I'll definitely take the win," head coach Jennifer SImonetti said. "We went into the same situation against this team last year and we lost those games. So, this says a lot about our team in terms of how they responded and stayed positive and kept working for the win."

The first half saw limited scoring opportunities for both teams and after 45 minutes of play the match went scoreless into halftime.

Second half the teams began to score goals. EOU started the scoring about four minutes into the second half. Sydney Nelson took a pass from Mauriana Gonzalez and put it past the Great Falls goalkeeper, Jocelyn Morris for the first goal of the day. This was Nelson's first collegiate goal.

Great Falls answered with its first goal of the season 16 minutes later, tying the game at one. However, the Mountaineers did not let the match stay tied long. Fifteen seconds later, EOU scored its second goal of the match, on Tori Fedora goal.

Fedora's goal looked as if it would be the game-winning-goal but Great Falls had a different plan. With one minute and 34 seconds remaining in the game and EOU ahead by one, 2-1, the Argos' Ashley Todd beat Kailey Moss to tie the game at two.

EOU and Great Falls would head to overtime tied at two.

In overtime, E. Whitehurst scored the game-winning-goal less than four minutes in, to give EOU the, 3-2, victory over Great Falls.

Nelson and E. Whitehurst picked up three points on the afternoon, as each scored a goal and collected an assist.

Eastern Oregon returns to the field on Saturday when they travel to Ontario, Ore. to scrimmage Treasure Valley Community College. After that EOU travels east to take on Point Park (Pa.), Walsh (Ohio) and Malone (Ohio.)
