SPOKANE, Wash. – Eastern Oregon University swept No. 25 Carroll (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) and Great Falls (25-14, 25-23, 25-17) on the final day of the Cascade/Frontier Red Lion Challenge. With the pair of wins EOU improves to 5-1 on the season.
Stefani Sorensen led the offensive charge for the Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon as she recorded 26 kills (14 against Carroll and 12 against Great Falls). Taylor Stewart followed with 19. Karly Stack dished out 40 assists, 20 in both matches to lead EOU.
"The girls played great today and it showed that we have a couple of matches under our belt now," said Head Coach Kaki Morehead. "The tournament was a good one all the way around."
In a match that featured two top 25 teams, No. 25 Carroll and No. 21 Eastern Oregon was a highly contested match. There were 29 tie scores and 12 lead changes. The Mountaineers pulled off a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) sweep of the Fighting Saints.
EOU and Carroll had a back and forth set one as the game was tied at six after the first 12 points. Eastern Oregon looked as if it was going to start to pull way after that and after an attack error by Elli Graff, EOU found themselves up four points, 11-7.
The lead did not last long as Carroll answered right back to tie the game at 11. The set remained close until a kill by Kasaundra Tuma put the Mountaineers back up four. That was all EOU needed as it took set one 25-22.
Set two remained extremely close as neither team held a lead over four points for the set. EOU and Carroll battled to 11 tied scores and six lead changes in the set. With the set tied at 17, Eastern Oregon scored the next four points to take a 21-17 lead. This was the last lead change of the set and Eastern Oregon came away with a 25-23 win. After two sets, EOU led 2-0.
EOU raced out to a fast start in the third set taking a 7-2 lead after a kill by Stewart. However, Carroll bounced right back and scored the next five points to tie the match at seven. From that point forward there were eight tied scores in the set. EOU took control of the third set after tying it up at 21 on a Casey Loper kill. An attack error by the Fighting Saints Graff gave EOU a 25-22, set 3 win and a 3-0 sweep of Carroll.
Eastern Oregon continued its dominating play on Saturday at the Red Lion Challenge as they defeated Great Falls 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-17).
EOU and Great Falls were locked into a close first set on as it was a back and forth set. With a 15-13 lead, Eastern Oregon took control of the match. Tuma recorded a kill which was the first of seven straight points to put the Mountaineers ahead 22-13. Great Falls scored one more point and EOU closed out the first set scoring the last three points of the set on kills by Kassi Howarth, Sorensen and Tuma. EOU won set one 25-14.
EOU did not have as easy of a time in set two, as Great Falls and Eastern Oregon had 13 tied scores and seven lead changes in the set. The biggest lead for either team in the second set was three points. With the set tied at 21, EOU took control after a kill by Jessalynn Smith gave the Mountaineers a 22-21 lead. EOU did not look back and extended its led to 24-21. Great Falls tried to come back but a kill by Howarth capped off the win for the Mountaineers.
Set three started off as a close set, but EOU took control early. With the score tied at five, the Mountaineers scored the next four points, to take a 9-5 lead. During that stretch, Stack recorded two aces.
Great Falls tried to battle back, but EOU would not let them. EOU continued to extend its lead and after a kill by Stewart, EOU led 18-13. EOU continued to hold on to a five point lead and with the score of 23-17, the Mountaineers scored the last two points of the set on a kill by Sorensen and a ace by Bobbi Sumpter, giving EOU the set and the match, 3-0.
Volleyball returns to the court on Wednesday, Aug. 28, when they take on Webber International University (Fla.) in Babson Lake, Fla. Match time is set for 11 a.m. PT.
