Box Score 2 Klamath Falls, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon University softball team (10-21, 1-13 CCC) was swept by Oregon Institute of Technology (28-9, 12-4 CCC) this afternoon 1-9 and 7-8.
In the first match against the hustlin' owls of Oregon Tech, EOU was the first to score in the top of the first inning. OIT would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Mountaineers struggled to battle back as the hustlin' owls held them scoreless the remainder of the game. Oregon Tech only scored two runs until the bottom of the fifth inning when they tacked on five more runs. This brought the score to 9-1 ending the game with two outs and one runner left on base in the bottom of the fifth due to the mercy rule.
In the second game, the Mountaineers came out strong and scored first yet again.
Mariebeth Watanabe made it to first base on an error from OIT. Teammate
Cassie Wendt would then force Watanabe out on second base, leaving a runner on first with one out.
Katie Martell advanced Wendt to third base off of a hit to right field. Wendt then scored off of a single from
Sarah Jackson, ending the top of the first ahead, 1-0. OIT answered back with an RBI by
Alyssa Davis, scoring teammate Shauna Collins.
Both teams remained scoreless for three straight innings until EOU's Wendt homered at the top of the fifth, giving the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. The hustlin' owls battled back with their first batter, McKenzie Shrum, hitting a double to left field. She would then advance to third on a pass ball before Sara Coates hitting her in. Teammate Melissa Logan would score Coates before heading into the duggout leading 3-2.
OIT would then hold Eastern scoreless at the top of the sixth, adding four more runs during their at-bats. The Mountaineers then rallied, entering the top of the seventh down 2-7. Georgie Kelly and
Hanna Findley began the inning with two singles. Watanabe then walked to first, loading the bases with no outs. Wendt stepped up to the plate and doubled to right field scoring two runs and closing the gap 4-7. With Watanabe on third base and a pitching change, teammate Martell kept the rally going with a single to left field adding another run. Jackson was then walked to first base as Wendt waited on third.
Stephanie Maestretti hit a grounder to shortstop who fielded Jackson out at second base, allowing Wendt to score with only one out. Teammate
Gracie Flyg then singled to left field, scoring Martell and tying the game 7-7. Rachel Hatzel struck out before Kelly ended the inning flying out.
At the bottom of the seventh, OIT had one more at bat to prevent extra innings. Oregon Tech's Schmidt would bat first and hit a homerun over the left field fence ending the game 7-8.
Eastern Oregon University softball will be in action again tomorrow (Saturday, April 6th) when they face Southern Oregon. Game time is set for 11 a.m. Live stats will be available online at EOUSports.com.
