Box Score 2 La Grande, Ore - The Eastern Oregon University softball team swept Northwest University this afternoon 4-2 and 10-2.
In the first game Eastern (16-29, 7-21 CCC) would take the lead early on during the second inning on a sacrifice fly ball to left field from
Stephanie Maestretti. In the fourth inning
Katie Martell hit her second single homerun of the weekend over the left field fence. The Mountaineers would not let up as they scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings securing their lead 4-0.
Alex Hillmick and Eastern's defense would hold the Eagles scoreless until the seventh inning when they snuck in two runs. But Northwest's last inning surge was not enough as Hillmick struck out their last batter to close the first game with a score of 4-2.
During the second game, both teams would go scoreless until the fourth inning. With bases loaded, Eastern's Georgie Kelly stepped up to the plate and hit a hard single up the middle scoring two of her teammates. The Mountaineers then went on a hitting streak scoring four more runs before heading back into the dugout, giving them a 6-0 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning.
Northwest (7-31, 4-20) tried to answer back in the top of the sixth inning scoring only two runs off of a fielding error by EOU. That wouldn't be enough as Hillmick doubled to right center on the first pitch, scoring Martell who had reached on a base hit to right field. Then
Gracie Flyg hit a hard single to right field, scoring two of her teammates. That would increase their lead to 9-2 before Maestretti stepped up to the plate. After Flyg advanced to third on two wild pitches by Northwest, Maestretti singled to center field scoring her teammate. The Mountaineers did not have to return to defense due to the mercy rule as they took the second game 10-2.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Tuesday as they face Walla Walla University. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Peggy Anderson field in La Grande, Ore. Live stats will be available at EOUSports.com.
